Can Hyperacusis Make Your Tinnitus Permanently Worse?

      Tinnitus Since:
      07/2005
      Cause of Tinnitus:
      Loud Noise, Ear Infection, TMJ
      I have heard some different opinions on this matter...

      Is it possible for a noise that you may be sensitive to due to your hyperacusis (a bike bell, beep from an electronic scanner, or a car horn) permanently making your tinnitus worse/damaging your hearing.

      I've heard some people say it depends on the person. It has to be over 115db. or a firm yes that it can.

      If you can shed any sort of light on this matter then it would be much appreciated!

      Hi Kris -

      Hyperacusis represents a decreased threshold for discomfort, not a decreased threshold for damage. A hyperacusic is no more susceptible to auditory damage from a given sound than a non-hyperacusic.
