Low-Frequency Fleeting Tinnitus?

Has anyone experienced this? Just happened to me on one of my bad days and really ripped me up emotionally inside but quickly went away just like fleeting T.

 

What is "low frequency" to you? My regular T is around 11kHz. So even a 1kHz tone is "low" to me.

But yes, I do get that from time to time.

 

Not sure what the frequency was, honestly I'd rather forget about it. it was just much lower than anything I've experienced so far. I've experienced fleeting T long before the onset of T but never anything like that.

 

I'm still not sure that I experience more fleeting T than I used to before the onset of my constant T. It sure SEEMS like it, but I may just pay more attention to it.

A couple months ago I was driving on the freeway (windows up, radio on) and I got a LOUD blast of what seemed around 7 or 800hz fleeting tinnitus. It was so loud that I heard it over the radio and road noise. Guess what? Nothing changed with my regular T. It wasn't the sign of anything ominous.

 

I did have fleeting low frequency T. It would sound like an engine or thunder. Mostly felt like humming on the back of my neck. It would stop went I spoke then come back. It did this for several months off and on. It would come stay for a few days then leave. One time it stayed 15 days. About killed me. Steroids knocked it out for a couple of weeks. Came back recently and stayed, on day 33. I started lipoflavnoids last Wed. I know it is still there but about 80% quieter.

 

I have just started with a low frequency tinnitus, a week ago, that is there when I wake up. It usually lasts around 3 or 4 hours and is a low drone, not unlike a helicopter waiting to take off that is a couple of kilometers away, or even comparable to a cat purring on my shoulder. Sometimes I also have a frequency that is fleeting and two octaves above the low drone at the same time.Most of this, seems to be in the left side of my head. I have no explanation as to why this may have just started happening over the Christmas holidays, I have lived in a quiet forest for many months with no other real sounds present. Interesting to read these threads with so many sufferers; this kind of problem makes you think you are on your own! Obviously, that is not the case !!

 

I’ve started getting an ultra low hum in one ear, but not all the time. But more than fleeting. It’s like a propellor plane flying in the distance. Very low frequency and seems to pulsate at the same rate as my heart yet not perfectly in sync with it ie a bit delayed.

Also I can’t hear it when I block my ears and it goes away for a while if I block my ears for a bit. Annoying to have high pitch T and now ultra low, although the high one is probably at the lowest it’s been for quite sometime.

I’m wondering if it’s the result of three acoustic “incidences” in two months (had temporary high then low freq hearing loss in that ear and took prednisolone). Or maybe recent bppv in that ear, or a recent flight, or noise cancelling headphones or maybe occlusion effect from walking with earplugs is the cause. Or all of the above.

 

In case anyone finds this thread later, +1 data point: I just had an episode of low hum fleeting T, for the first time ever (my fleeting T has always been high tones). It resolved without issue, but it did scare the bejeezus out of me.

 

How long did it take to resolve?

 

You might smile at me for kicking up all this fuss for something so seemingly minor... but it took about 2 minutes. Noticed in the shower that there's some new tone, covered my ears to see if it was T, noticed astoundingly loud low-frequency hum in right ear, panicked, walked around like a caged tiger for a while with covered ears and could feel the volume dropping in real-time, then it was all gone and back to baseline without a trace. Since then I had a (mostly sleepless) night and it's still gone; only the anxiety is still with me.

If the sound was a high pitched tone instead of a low hum I would have recognized it as fleeting T immediately and wouldn't have worried; the low hum is what caused the panic because I've never experienced this before and thought it will stay.
