N-Acetylcysteine (NAC)

I ordered some, I thought that I would go for this before trying Nicotinamide Riboside as both supplements seem to be getting some good feedback but this one is the cheaper of the two.

 

I've just ordered NAC - 600mg.

Can someone give me a quick summary of how to take it and how much please?

 

Hello Allan, usually the maintenance dose is 600mg. If you suffer noise trauma or want some otoprotection, take 1200mg. For me it upsets my stomach but it is proven in several studies and it is a good medication. Personally and according to my doctor it is good to take breaks from taking it. It helps to get rid of mucus and helps if your ETD is clogged. My only side effect is that it upsets my stomach a lot. Hope this helps!

 

For how long would you take it before taking a break at 600mg a day please? Will it help existing tinnitus?

I have been thinking of trying this, myself, but confused about all the different brands out there (capsules, tablets, added filler and all that). Out of curiosity, what brand did you buy?

 

I've switched to PharmaNAC from regular NAC caps. You can read some of my old posts on the problems with NAC and oxidation. I think it's worth the extra expense. It's no longer available on Amazon. It also allows me to "stack" acetyl-L-carnitine without any stomach upset. This study was in an old thread:

I’ve never taken NAC before and I took two of these today together at 600mg each and had no problems. I did eat shortly after. I will give them a go without food at some point.

 

Taking these on an empty stomach has no effect on my stomach.

I have ototoxic caused tinnitus that has been gradually decreasing since I stopped any meds. I was advised to start taking NAC.

I started with 600mg in the morning for four days. Then moved to 600mg morning and evening. After 2 days I felt I was having no side effects so I started taking 250mg of ALCAR (Acetyl L-Carnitine), 5 days later, no side effects so I upped the ALCAR dose to 500mg.

I've been taking 1200mg NAC for 11 days now, 250mg of ALCAR for 5 days and 500mg for 6 days. Its a little early to tell but I do feel its making a difference. My ears aren't as sensitive anymore. I used to have bad periods for several hours where loud noises were sore or annoyed me but I don't recall anything the last week, maybe more. The tinnitus in my right ear has really dropped, if I concentrate really hard it will start up, dumb I know so I won't be doing that again. Left ear is still there but feels like its lowering.

I don't know if its the NAC and ALCAR or just naturally healing but it is getting quieter and my ears aren't as sensitive to loud harsh noises. I'll finish the bottle and report back.

Most pharmacies, health stores and even big supermarket chains will stock these. Just make sure to get a high quality one from a reputable brand.

I've stopped for the last few days to trial a B Complex supplement. I don't feel any bad side effects so I'll gradually start the NAC and ALCAR again at small doses. Its important to take things slow when trying supplements.

 

So 500mg a good place to start. I will look for it soon.

 

Should I check with a doctor about taking NAC, or is it another harmless supplement like Vitamin C?

 

@Lilah -- From what I can gather, it is pretty harmless. I'm a bit mystified by some of the (undo) concerns regarding supplementing with NAC. I would suggest starting out slow, and if it goes well, gradually increase it, monitoring it as you progress.

The biggest concern I would have (though it isn't very big) is if it initiated a major detoxification episode. NAC is the go to supplement in ER rooms for when people come in with toxic poisonings of all kinds. The reason for this is because NAC rapidly increases glutathione levels, which is the body's foremost detoxification enzyme.

 

NAC and Vitamin E increase lung cancer in mice. I know it's not a human study but it's still scary.

It appears it increased the rate of metastasis, not caused the cancer itself.

It certainly doesn't make me feel any better about the roughly 10 years I've been taking NAC as an otoprotective agent.

 

Quick but important question for anyone who has knowledge. I have noticed NAC supplements are being used extensively for tinnitus.

I read somewhere, on another site, that it should not be used if you have amalgams.

Does anyone here have any first hand knowledge about this information?

 

Can NAC still have an effect on a spike 7 days after noise exposure?

do you know if NAC is compatible with hypothyroidism ? I read a study recently and some researches revealed NAC in high dose could be an endocrin disruptor.

To my surprise, the combination of NAC and curcumin seem to lessen my tinnitus somewhat. Might be temporary, but I'm happy nonetheless. Hoping it'll do something for my pain hyperacusis as well.

 

Hello, what kind of curcumin do you take ? Pills or powder ?
