I was pumping my bike and the tube popped and exploded in my ear, now I have a major spike in noise. Is it permanent? Please give me advice if anyone had experienced anything like this.

There was a similar question a few days ago in this thread:

      https://www.tinnitustalk.com/threads/feeling-on-the-edge.6432/

My advice - which I apply to myself as well - is to wear ear plugs whenever you leave your house and take them back out when you return. In fact, I take more care to protect my ears than my eyes, these days...

Like always, your guess is as good as anybody else's.

There is no knowing for certain.

I'm quoting @attheedgeofscience's excellent advice found from his profile.

You might also consider taking N-acetylcysteine and Acetyl-l-carnitine.

      http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17023129

You might also want to consider undergoing HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy).

      Results vary. More here: https://www.tinnitustalk.com/threads/hyperbaric-oxygen-therapy.211/

All this if you decide to do something about it. The window of opportunity is NOW though. Not a week from now.

There's a chance the spike will resolve on its own without you doing anything.

      Hopefully it settles soon.

This kind of thing has happened to me many times Dan: my dog barked right next to my ear, a kid threw fireworks near where I was walking, I dropped a hot dish in the kitchen... luckily the resulting spikes have always been temporary, although it once lasted a couple of weeks. Keep us posted.

Thank you all for your support. So Markku, that would even apply to someone with existing permanent tinnitus? Thanks Maria, yea this was as loud or louder than a firecracker, so I'm hoping I react the same as you.

New auditory insult -> possible new damage -> what I told may still be effective in reversing further permanent damage.

Or so I think. ATEOS or someone else more knowledgeable is welcome to correct me.

I feel your pain. Three years ago a very loud fire cracker went off 6 feet away from me My t spiked for 2-3 months, but my T went o normal base line..not quite normal but T volume went up just little bit.
from my Experience it will go away..give your self any where from 2 weeks to 3-4 months. I am pretty sure it will go away.

I have a spike now because 105DB fire alaram went off . It was about 6 feet away from me. My T has spiked Although Volume of T is not loud its so damn annoying!!
I asked the same question -would it go away.

One think I would request is that keep us posted because If some thing similar happens to any one else they some what know that it will went away.
Again -try to relax and know it will go away since it goes away for most people.

Thanks Sean, I appreciate that very much and I will keep you posted here. It's especially frustrating because I was having one of my best T days since onset, then this happens!

It did a bit but my T is so up and down from one day to the next it's hard to say. It does seem more reactive to external noises now and I'm having a loud morning right now so I'm not sure. Thanks for checking on me.

Np ..Dan I am actually trying to figure out what happens to T after such exposures .
It seeems such incidents are unavoidable and I am sure other T sufferers are wondering if T goes to baseline after auxh accidents .
My T has subsides just a little bit after I was exposed to home burglary Alaram for 6-7 seconds ..I still hear T lot louder than before .Lets see if completely subside like before .

Update: The spike hasn't subsided, instead the volume increased, especially yesterday. I'm hoping some of this is stress/anxiety related. I tried to get in to see my Kaiser ENT but they wouldn't schedule me immediately, I went today and they are next to useless. I'm taking the NAC acetyl carbine daily. I'm afraid I should have gone to the ER and demanded steroids. But tomorrow marks just one week for this spike so I can only hope things will improve but not looking good at all.

This is my fear as well, bicycle tire exploding. When I just had my MTB with its low pressure tires I wasn't so paranoid but now with road bike tires that are pumped to 100+ psi it's very scary to think what would happen if it exploded. And if you check some cycling forums you can see it actually happens. People usually describe their ears ringing for a while and muffled hearing. Kind of scary that people just brush it off like it's nothing
