Do You Think It Would Be Safe for Me to Try Activated Charcoal for My Tinnitus?

I have never heard of this as a treatment for tinnitus and probably wouldn't work but I figured maybe it might be worth trying.

This could be a crazy idea but from what I understand, activated charcoal can remove drugs and toxins from the body (not sure which body parts because i'm not an expert).

The long shot idea is that maybe there is some kind of toxic crap somewhere that could be absorbed and eliminated.

The thing I wonder though is that if I take medication, will it affect the drugs? Would that be dangerous?

If anyone has used it please let me know.

Activated charcoal will trap things that are in your digestive tract, it's not some miracle drug and toxin remover. It's great for reducing the effect of some toxins if they are just ingested, but I don't think it's going to do anything for your tinnitus.
If you take other medications with it, it will most likely reduce the bioavailability of the medication making it less effective. I keep some on hand in case of emergencies, but I've never used it myself. It's probably safe, but I don't think it's going to do anything for you.

No. Activated charcoal is used to treat overdoses of some drugs. To work it has to be given early because it has its action in the intestine directly where it adsorbs (not absorbs) the drug and carries it out via the chocolate starfish. It's a reasonable home remedy for wind too if that particular malady troubles you (or those around you). It will have zero impact on tinnitus because even if the toxins and crap you refer to are present and are indeed guilty of anything, they are already in your system well past the point of absorption by the gut. Charcoal can't reach them, unless you can find someone silly enough to dialyse you against a charcoal filter. That would be the only way to get charcoal in contact with blood-borne substances. No practitioner who values his or her license would even consider that for tinnitus.

Its not poisonous though. If you really feel you need to try it, it won't hurt. It just won't help. If it somehow does then you've found our Eldorado.

Thanks guys so much for explaining it to me. I figured it worked on the digestive track but I wasn't sure because of some of the ambiguity I read on some websites. Maybe I will get some on hand just in case I do something stupid like take a med and immediately regret it. I'm sure it has to be taken a very short time after the drug is taken though like you all said. :)

I was going to say in my original post that I took a pill the other day and like 5 minutes later I thought, boy was that stupid. I tried throwing it up but I don't think it all came up....I think it dissolved into a powder fairly quickly. I typed all that before when I was writing the original post but deleted it...lol

You guys answered my question exactly how I needed it answered. Thanks again.
