Gabapentin (Neurontin)

Well I have been taking 800mg x 3/day normally for my numb and sometimes stinging/burning toes. That can cause sedation especially with Klonopin added so best to titrate up if you're going to try it. It may have to build up in your bloodstream for 3 weeks though. Most people want instant relief, but it doesn't always work that way. And I have no idea if there is any ototoxic effects.

 

But OTO-311 was for acute phase, no?

 

I'm not sure. I hope it's for chronic T. I'll have to look into trial criteria...good question.

 

I take it to chill out usually once a week with some red wine.

One time I took it every other day for a couple of weeks. I got some side effects with my eyes.

Started getting double vision. Not good.

It didn't do my T any good...just chilled me out.

 

Anyone experiencing ocular neovascularization with Neurontin?

 

I take Gabapentin for my neuropathy. I have noticed it has increased my tinnitus. Been taking it for 4 months 600 mg a day. I have had tinnitus forever!! I didn't even know what year to put on here as I have had it for as long as I can remember. getting progressively worse as I get older!

I was on neurontin 300mg 2x day for a few years. Always did really good with it. I had a T spike a couple weeks and got scared reading all stuff about gabapenting being ototoxic so I stopped taking it. Big mistake, horrible withdrawal.
When I figured out what was going on I started taking it again I immediately felt beter. My T decreased (so maybe it was high from withdrawal).
Well, last night I took it and my T exploded for an hour. It was crazy loud. Then after an hour it lowered (to near it's lowest volume). I was able to sleep pretty good after that.

This morning I took a very small amount and T again increased in volume (within normal range) and seemed to settle after an hour.

I feel trapped at this point. I know if you stop abruptly tinnitus and sound sensitivity can be bad. I have read some have had it hang around for a long time. On the other hand am I at risk taking any at this point?

I appreciate any and all help!

 

TAPER. Do not stop taking it altogether. IMO You are doing the right thing. I would suggest taking a dose like 50mg 11x a day or 275mg twice a day, for a couple weeks and lowering it by 50mg every four weeks. You were on it for 2 years, and if it caused withdrawl you can't just jump down to 25mg or something(I wouldn't guess anyway), but I do not know anything about neurontin, and I will let someone else who does give you more educated advice.

 

Did you take Neurontin with anything else like Klonopin? Did you have to take it every day? Do you titrate off Neurontin?

 

What was your dose of Gabapentin and Klonopin and how long did the reduction last? Did it eventually stop working?

 

Hey, were you taking any medication in addition to Neurontin and how many months did the tinnitus drop? Thanks for any help you can give.

 

Do you think Trileptal would work for Tinnitus? If so, what dose?

 

I think I started on 300mg Gabapentin + .5mg Clonazepam and titrated up to 900mg Gabapentin + .5mg Clonazepam
Both at 3 x/day. Worked very good for some time until your brain grows resistant or tolerant to it. It is worth trying but will make you quite tired when you start, at least it did for me. I was still getting awakening hissing though after a quiet day.

Someone from America tried this drug?
It is not available in Europe (it is fairly new) and I have don't have more information about it.

Didn't some people combine it with trobalt?
I'm not recommending it, but looking through the thread some claimed it reduced their T even further while on trobalt.

 

This is just a gabapentin prodrug; there's no reason to expect that it functions much differently from gabapentin itself, which many people have tried, mostly without much success.

The fact that Danny Boy is still gobbling concoctions of prescribed and unprescribed drugs years after making his initial "taking trobalt cured me!" posts, speaks volumes...

 

I agree, I don't think it's wise to follow in Danny's footsteps, but I recall a few others mentioning it helped alongside trobalt. @papu I think used them both together and had a good lasting result after discontinuing.

I don't know what to think, I wish there was an actual approved medical study for the efficacy and safety of trobalt for the treatment of tinnitus.

 

Gabapentin did zip for my T. It actually gave me earaches and occasional T in my good ear. I Stopped it, once the side effects kicked in.

 

Save your money. Gabapentin, Lyrica or anything of that ilk does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for tinnitus. I've been taking the med for 9 years now for nerve pain resulting from an accident where I was hit by a distracted driver. I was on a motorcycle and stopped due to traffic congestion on the freeway. I suffered brain trauma when bone shards from broken ribs and vertebrae severed my spinal cord, and caused leaking of spinal cord fluid into the brain. I was put into a medically induced coma due to the numerous other internal
injuries I incurred which left me in horrific pain. Of late, the past year or so my tinnitus has been ramping up. As possible treatment, I recently tried some sound frequency "remedies" off of YouTube and they only made it WORSE!! My right ear roars, hisses, buzzes, rings...24/7. It's absolutely maddening as many of you can attest to. So now I'm looking in another direction for some relief.

Because my doc. would prescribe me gabapentin for my anxienty and try it for my T. I will give it a try probably. But i don't know. Now i am on Trobalt. I will try it for 10 days, low doses. Two days on 100 mg x 3 and no change in my T.
For now the only things that works for me are: clonazepam (quiet my T a lot: i can hear it just in very quiet places); but unfortunatly give addiction so i use it just when i want a sort of "normal day" (4 or 5 time in a month).
Also a sort of trt work for my residual inibition. After one or two hours of personal white noise (arrange on the lost freq. of my T that is very modular, so no pure tones but noise and sometimes an unbearable "sharp wind") i have a sort of residual inibition that gave me relief for some hours (but if i rest in silence T worsing immediatly: it's just an help for my mind to forget about is fu***ng sound).

 

Yes, zip means nothing. Watch the Benzos and don't take them to long. Trobalt also!

You have to laugh. People always think if you mention a modern date we are so advanced that brain surgery will be safe. 'Hey its 2016 brain surgery is safe' We would laugh at people who said 'Hey its 1920 brain surgery is safe' But they did. Brain surgery is never safe.

Klonopin and Amitriptyline have saved my butt for 3 years. I take them for Atypical Trigeminal neuralgia. However they have helped my Hyperacusis, Tinnitus and Anxiety (Panic Disorder) greatly, and yes I know the risks so don't bother. If you have ATN facial pain you will take anything, if you don't don't bother commenting if it's negative. Neurotin increases my H and T long-term (although even this goes away on discontinuation). However I do use it as needed for anxiety and while I might and I say might get a small spike in T, it is gone by the next night. Take what works for you and listen to your own body.

 

I don't understand. First you say that the Klonopin and Amitriptyline has helped your T and H. Then you say that they increase your T and H.

 

Never used those drugs for my trogeminal nevralgia. tegretol or trileptal

 

No dude, he just says he says some butt problems and Klonopin - Amitriptyline are helping. For 3 years too, so they must be a real pain in the ass.

 

You have TN type 1, type 2 doesn't respond to those meds.

 

hi; it's neurovascular tn. all surgeons would avoid the surgery. The succes rate is higher for the first 4 years. after there is the risk of worsening and drug resistancy. It will remain my last chance. Actually i took 1,2gr of oxcarbazepine. It give relief. Difficult to tritate but effective.

 

If you're stressed out by your tinnitus and can't sleep gabapentin will help you relax and forget about the T...and let you sleep.

But that nice high it gives you only works once a week max at say 2-3grams over a day. Any more often and it looses the "magic" and just makes you stupid as a stoner.

It you take it more often, it will effect your vision. You'll get aches in your fingers, joints and ears.

I was taking it three times a week over the last month because the heat was making it difficult to sleep...and I hot into a bad routine with it.

It makes reading difficult because it blurs your vision and if I hit my finger off something it REALLY hurt.

I have tinnitus in my left ear and an on and off tremor in my right ear.(3.5years)

While on gabapentin I almost totally forget about the tinnitus(it didn't go away though) but damn that tremor really build up...like a wasp!

I think it causes bloating and swelling in the body. That may effect the eustachian tube on my right ear...causing said problem.

Anyway, for one off relief its good fun with a beer or two but do not make a habit of it. Its not good for you...plus the withdrawals are very itchy and stingy and also cause sleeplessness.

It's nothing like phenibut or benzo withdrawals but still not very pleasant.
