I just wanted to say hello to everyone in here. I've had T for quite a few years and I'm only starting to realize that I need all the support I can get when it comes to this condition (I've always been a stick it out alone sort of person) With that said I have a wealth of experiences and knowledge I've picked up along the way as I continue to fight the good fight (A fight that constitutes finding that elusive silence whether figurative or real).

If anyone needs any help or support I'll be around.

Hi, SymphonSilencio, and welcome to the community! Thanks for offering your support and knowledge to the forum. It's not such a lonely battle when we can share our experiences and what has/hasn't worked; after all, we're all in this together!

Now, some questions for you: How did your tinnitus begin, and is yours unilateral or bilateral? Can you say specifically what caused the tinnitus, or was it a gradual occurrence with no particular origin?

I was taking a drug for 3-4 months when I went to bed one night and heard something like a cricket noise in my ear. I told my mom the next day about it (she isnt the type to ever heed anything I mention or say) So she kinda told me oh thats nothing. Couple days later I started to realize that my hearing somehow changed as well. Sounds started to really startle, scare, and annoy me as well. I felt like a dog during a thunderstorm. After about 7-10 days I decided to call the doctor and try to explain to them what was wrong. The nurse/secretary told my doctor and after coming back on the line told me to stop taking the drug. I stopped taking the drug even though my mother insisted that side effects are temporary and I should be fine. And thats the long story short.

I'm not really keen on specifying the drug for personal reasons. My tinnitus is unilateral on my right ear. At the time I had a pretty bad sinus + head cold thing going on and I attributed what I got from that. When I analyzed the extent of what had happened to me there was NO WAY I could believe any sick spell could give me the deadly trifecta I happened upon. Ringing in the ear, hearing sensitivity, and hearing loss.

I'm so sorry to hear that the drug caused the ringing, hearing sensitvity, and hearing loss for you. Drug-induced tinnitus seems to be pretty common these days; that's what happened to me, too. Or, that is, I had mild tinnitus for many years (it wasn't very loud and I had acclimated to it). Then, a doctor prescribed blood pressure medicine for me, and that's when mine became really loud and unbearble. It can be a very scary thing to go through. I have unilateral tinnitus in my right ear, too. I got off all blood pressure medicine, but the tinnitus and the pulsating tinnitus (heartbeat sound in right ear) remain.

I am very impressed that you are handling yours so well! You seem to have a very good, positive attitude toward it, and that goes a long way toward acclimating to the effects of the tinnitus.

What types of things, beside the remeron, have you tried for the tinnitus? Are you using a hearing aid or masking device, or listening to sound or music? Are you sleeping normally?

Well I appreciate your breakdown of my general attitude toward it. Yes, currently I have a very good attitude toward it although that comes from many experiences and some triumphes along the way.

The things that have made headway for me in having T are things you may not like to do such as Tai Chi or meditation which both have worked wonders for me. For the record I dont use remeron anymore not at all. I use nature sounds for sleep and listen to pink noise cd during the day. When I saw the cost of TRT I knew it wouldnt do much for me so any hearing aid device sort of puts me off when I think about it. I'm sleeping normally as of today as my mind feels clear of anxiety (the T induced kind anyway ) and my body functions the way I want it to without it letting me down.

When I come to a better understanding of my circumstance with T and how I've conquered it in a mental way (big statement but I feel that way now) I'll let you know. I know your suffering and as I say to some of the others if I can find a way to help you I will. Were all in this fight together.

That is excellent! I agree with you about the meditation; it really helps. So does listening to natural sounds, etc. Sounds like you've gone a long way toward acclimating to the T, and as you know, scientists/doctors are working on a cure. In the meantime, looks like you're getting a good handle on the T. Anxiety is a big hurdle to overcome, and you are doing very well in that area. Keep us posted on your progress!

Hi Alison, nice to meet you. The snake sound might be high-pitched white noise, rather than a pure tone like some people hear.

      Symphon,
Sounds like you had a bout of Hyperacusis, as did I several years ago. But generally after Hypersacusis fades away you are left with tinnitus. I have had many ups and downs since then but I am a hundred times better than I was a couple of years ago, just through habituation, anti-anxiety meds, white noise, etc... Anyway, glad your here.
