      Hi all,

Seen a few times that people have had manageable T, then have had to take an antibiotic which has made it 10X worse.

My question is: say someone my age or even younger, how are you supposed to go your whole life without taking any? Surely at some point everyone will have an infection requiring anti biotics?

I know there are others like penicillin, but these don't work for all infections do they?

      Thanks!

I think in general most of the things people take ABs for, don't really require ABs... and there's good evidence that taking them do bad things to you (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20705661, http://chriskresser.com/the-high-price-of-antibiotic-use-can-our-guts-ever-fully-recover).

So, I think most of the things that people "have" to take antibiotics for, are things that they'd actually recover from just fine on their own, and there might be plenty of good non-tinnitus reasons to do so.

That said, obviously MRSA is a real thing, and so is severe strep throat, Lyme disease, etc. If I was unfortunate enough to develop one of those, I'd say fuck it and roll the dice and take the pills. But, for lesser ailments, whenever I am scripted ABs, I put them on a shelf and don't take them unless I'm not doing better on my own 2-3 days later. As a result of this, I haven't taken any for years now, and I also have a shelf full of antibiotics in case the world ends :D

edit: I also don't think that most people are likely to experience a permanent worsening of tinnitus as a result of isolated use of usual antibiotics. I think the fluoroquinolone ABs are scary and overused and I wouldn't take that shit unless my life depended on it, but penicillin is probably not a big deal from a T point of view. It might be a bigger deal from a "messes up your stomach in a way that takes years to recover from" point of view, but a lot of that probably depends on the state of your stomach to start with.

Haha I guess this is the wise thing to do! I'll do the same, thanks :)

I just worry about future ear infections etc, and throat infections and things like that. I guess they can go away on their own but sometimes you have to take stuff incase it spreads!

I think dentists give you a form of penicillin which isn't ototoxic?

Very few of the ABs are directly ototoxic, but there's increasing evidence of very complex downstream effects... ABs change gut flora, which directly impacts neurotransmitter levels and god knows what else.

I know that my own anxiety and depression have been GREATLY helped by regular intake of specific probiotics. The effect on T is much less direct or predictable, but it's there -- when I feel better, my T is in the background a lot more.

Severe inner ear infections of a demonstrated bacterial cause seem like a reasonable reason to take ABs, but they are not common at all, especially in adults. What's more common is "sinus infections" for which ABs are given, even though more and more research is piling up to indicate that such infections are generally viral and generally resolve on their own without much trouble.
