Does anyone's T go from mild to extremely loud in one day on a consistent basis?
It seems so many have spikes that deviate, but this is making me nuts. For months it goes from reasonable quiet wake to unmaskable intensity by afternoon in a day. Every week, twice a week. Then back to no sound on a day and way back up on the bad days, graduating down on successive day.
I'm just trying to see if anyone else has this kind of range on a consistant basis.
It's hard to habituate when I relive the shock of severe tinnitus twice a week.
Thank you for any answers or suggestions.

      1. What has your ENT specialist told you is causing your tinnitus?
      2. Do you know if you have EH (Endolymphatic Hydrops?)
      3. What type of hearing loss do you have?
      4. Do you keep a strict food journal that you might relate to your spikes and valleys?

      @Dr. Charlie

      1. They didn't say. I told them that hearing loss and possible medications and possible sinus fullness at onset. I had low tinnitus for 25 years. Then one day I had a low drone sound followed by hi pictch sound. This has happened before but the last time the hi tinnitus stayed. In the past it would go away.

      2. He suspects but can't confirm EH. Not sure why. He said to see a specialist.
I cut back on salt. So far no additional low drone fullness. no vertigo. No visible fluid in ear.

      3. see attached pic

      4. I eat very healthy. But even when I have some sweets or fatty food or grains, it doesn't change the good day. But some anti anxiety meds sometimes seem to have an effect if taken the night before. My sleep is the biggest factor in my tinnitus. Too much sleep triggers tinnitus on the cycles.

Thank you for your concern! Any input is appreciated.

Hi Larry, this T cycle is very common and unpredictable as what the timeline for the cycles will be. for me sometimes it's there for 3 or 4 days straight just blasting, then some what mild for 3 -5 days. Other times it's 10 days of blasting away then followed by 7 days mild days.

There is no rhyme or reason that I have found, and believe me I scoured the web and any ENT or Dr that would talk to me. A lot of us have this cycling T phenomenon.

I am not even sure that I "Hear" sounds anymore , its more like a super loud buzz in my head , not really localized to my ears . Almost more of a physical feeling then a sound. Having said that it definitely started as "sounds".

I have an undulating hum/vibration/buzz on the right side of my head/ear that I describe exactly like you do. I can hear the hum but it's more of a feeling. The right side of my head feels numb almost. WTF? Where does this come from? Is it part of tinnitus, hyperacusis, or something else?

We really seem having the same T.
High-pitched 16-17 kHz like old CRT TV sound.
      Cuts through everything.
      When really loud, oscillating.
Also seems louder in the morning.
      But maybe its the perception.

Mine is without any doubt much louder in the morning, takes an hour and half to wear down into baseline.
For me that is the worst , such an awful way to open your eyes in the morning.
And yes , super high freq 16-17 khz , sometimes I manage to mask it somewhat but the sensation is still there so there is no escaping it.

This does help a bit though.

Aural pain resulting from acoustic reflex.
      Painton SW1, Shaw MB.
      Author information
      Abstract

We present an unusual case of physical discomfort, as opposed to objective or subjective tinnitus, caused
by a unilateral acoustic reflex. The cause of the discomfort was identified audiologically by the use of
acoustic impedance audiometry. The dull pain that was elicited upon contraction and relaxation of the
stapedius muscle was eliminated with sectioning of the stapedial tendon. No explanation of the
mechanism for the pain is suggested at present.

Well, then there is the reactive part. This is where I really get lost. When my T is below about a 5/10 I can mask it and it often will receded slightly. If its above 5/10 then it will get louder and compete with the masking sound, so I have to not mask at all. It's always a game of chance. But today the loud oscillating 10k is gone and a very reasonable 5k is here, which is what I had for 25 years before the onslaught of 10k. My low buzz is manageable. Thats my crazy cycle lately, or maybe I'm just crazy. Starting to believe that.

      @Mike34
get checked for low frequency hearing loss. I had a sudden hearing loss that slowly came back but the low loss remained. It can be Hydrops. Nothing they can do but some diuretic meds (loop versions are bad!) I found that lowering salt intake a lot helps. Drink lots of water.

I was thinking mine may have something to do with the stapedius or TT. I can feel something spasm when I touch my ear or press the muscle underneath it.

I can't manage the extremes of this cycle. Today it started mild T had a great morning. Got through the afternoon ok. Not great. T rising. By 5pm it was too much. I reach for pain meds. They help stop the worst of it. Lowers the T and gives me peace. I'm trying not to. It's no answer. How can this be so extreme in a day.
How do I survive this? I just to want flush all the drugs out of me and find a new day. It's such a manic cycle of extremes. From virtually no tinnitus on one day to unmaskable by the end of next day.
I was so positive this morning. I feel hijacked.

Day by day. I think that's the only way I have found that helps me. Is it the Gabapentin that you take which lowers the volume and gives you peace?
P.S. You're not crazy. And 5k is not puppy either, I have 4k and I F--king loath it with every bone in my body. I'm trying so hard to not give it the time of day.

      Hey Soul,
I think it helps the anxiety. I don't have anxiety attacks like I used to so I suppose it helped that. I should have taken that instead. I just get so weak in spirit. Want to feel less.
I'm sorry I complain so much here. I try so hard to overcome.

This is where it's okay to say how your feeling, all get low times ,you get scared and yes it's terrifying at times to,especially when a new sound enters your world of T ,out of the blue .we all at times need to reflect back to when ours first began ,how we felt .Some over time have learnt to ignore it ,but others have a struggle ,a big struggle ,again were not all the same in how we respond to T .
We all try to overcome this condition Larry ,easier said than done .tomorrows another day .Hope you wake up tomorrow feeling better than today ,me to ..Hey we got through today ,bitchy as it was but we've done it .
Glad that your anxiety has dropped away ,that's good .Big hug from me to you .x

Mine goes from a little bit in the a.m. to lotta bit by the afternoon; par for the course. If it stayed low all day I wouldn't give it a second thought.

I'm a cyclic (2 days off, 1 day on) and I know what you mean -- it makes habituation a very difficult. It will start low in the morning (on a day on) and then crank up in the afternoon.

      Hi Marlene,
Your such a kind soul. I appreciate your words so much. I wish I had a support at home, perhaps I wouldn't whine so much here, but I feel so alone in this struggle except for the people here who understand.
I hope the same for you in your struggle that tomorrow is a better day.

Yeah, it's nuts. If the end of my bad day wasn't so extreme I could manage much better. Knowing it's coming also makes it so difficult. It's like knowing you'll be in an accident and reliving the pain on a consistent basis.
I hope your doing ok as possible.
