About to Become a Dad! Any Advice for a New Parent with Tinnitus?

Hi all!

Becoming a Dad on Friday. Pretty damn excited but obviously have my concerns when it comes to noise and lack of sleep.

Any advice for a new parent w/ tinnitus?

The first six months they are quiet.
They just eat and sleep.
When they get older they get louder.
I often wear plugs around my kids, but mine are older and when they are playing or going nuts it’s too much for me.

not usually, my hearing damaged occurred right after his 2nd birthday and we shortly afterwards put him in preschool. by this time I was really good at anticipating his shrieking and could get him away from right in my ear before he exploded. I used to have bad hyperacusis but I have improved a lot and he still screams but it doesn't hurt me like it used to.

 

Word! Yea I'll probably keep the coffee grinder muffs outside his room. I'm a little worried about newborn phase. But here we go! Btw, I did start taking spirulina the other day - things have been oddly toned down since then...

Unless you are rich or have a community/extended family that will support, having kids is a risky idea.

 

It makes it a million times easier bud. You have a beautiful life to care for for the rest of your life. You wont give a fuck about ringing brotha. That baby will keep you busy. Might induce spikes from sleep deprivation or stress, but they will subside and if shit really gets bad the child will be your happiness and saving grace if you wanna give up. Children make our ailments bother us much less. Congratulations

 

I'm not "rich" but definitely have no worries in that department and have a massive family/support network. I'm very lucky.

Ensure the child doesn't scream directly into your ear. So wear hearing protection when you are holding the child.

Also stay away from balloons. Balloons popping in closed spaces like a car is as dangerous as can be.

Now that's more like it. Having children makes it a million times easier. I actually found although I was getting a shorter sleep it was a better one, I was so tired at the start that I found when I hit the bed I was almost immediately asleep. I don't plug up when i'm around the kids, personally think it's ridiculous and nowhere near the volume needed to cause damage. Newborns are not that loud, the older kids are, I do find myself having to ask them to watch their volume but it's ok. Congrats and enjoy it man.

I am not rich nor do we have any family support whatsoever and it has been very difficult but still doable.

 

Would you recommend curcumin to our new father for oto-protection? (as: just in case)

 

As CSO of MPP I recommend everyone take curcumin that can.

 

I'm not against having kids, it's the kids who suffer if the parents don't have resources to support them.

If Governments are going to give hand outs to poor families that'd be great but it's not going to happen.

 

I like to think there is going to be some sort of shift in the future. Either becoming a parent will involve stricter expectations, or something like basic income will be implemented.

Here in Sweden there are parts of the social security net that keep people from hitting rock bottom if they're poor, it just doesn't work if you're poor and have a chronic ailment at the same time.

 

@Greg Clarke Oh - thank you so much for that "Genius" rating! You shouldn't have.

On a more serious note, you'd be surprised how many people hold their babies (so the mouth of the baby is right by their ear) and then proceed to post their horror story here.

 

@Greg Clarke Not going to a concert ever again, and not holding their child next to their ear are all common sense things, but apparently some people need to be reminded of those basic things (and some will even resist the message after it was spelled out for them).

 

Can I get a list of those people too when you get a chance.?
