Pink noise has a difference spectral quality than white noise... in general, it is less harsh. There are some very smart audio people here at TT that could give you an exact explanation of how the two differs, but that person would not be me!

There actually are several different "colors" of noise: Besides white and pink, there is blue, brown, violet and grey. You can check them all out, plus tons of different natural and urban sounds, on this noise app you can buy: http://www.tmsoft.com/ It comes in versions for your smart phone, computer, etc. I am sure there are other good programs out there, and people here at the site can help you make a custom masking mix for your tinnitus. This app is just an easy way to see what basic noises your ears like.

A lot of folks here find pink noise much easier to listen to than white. But I find the comfort level varies for me literally from day to day sometimes: I will have a "blue" or "rain forest" sound night, followed by a "pink" day.

Glad u like it! I luv that app. Goes with me everywhere...to bed every night, to work, camping in the middle of nowhere. Figure out what sounds you like and play with the mixes. Right now, my sleeping mix is half air conditioner, half running water.
And no, I don't work for TMSoft, dont own stock and they don't pay me to talk about their product. :p
      Sweet dreams!

Yes, LadyDi is correct. Pink noise is less harsh, more flat and even than white noise. In a nutshell, both contain the full spectrum of frequencies from 20hz to 20000hz that we humans can hear. In white noise, the spread of the signal is even. In Pink, it starts out with more signal power in the lower frequencies and lessens as you go higher in the spectrum. It is the preferred treatment for people suffering from Hyperacusis. Pink noise is also said to be better for sleeping with.
