Thumping in My Ear Was Caused by Tonic Tensor Tympani Syndrome (TTTS) — Now My Thumping Is GONE!

I came to this site back in May of this year looking for help. It was actually a relief to find that I wasn't alone and wasn't going crazy. Every time I yawned or buried, my right ear would start thumping. I started searching online for some answers and I FOUND A SOLUTION! There was a website that called these symptoms "Tonic Tensor Tympani Syndrome."

It can be caused by a few different things, but stress can bring it on. They mentioned that your C1 and C2 in your vertebra could be misaligned and could cause these symptoms. I went to my chiropractor and told him what I had read and he said he would adjust that area of the spine.

That was on a Thursday, and by Sunday of that week, my thumping was completely gone. It hasn't returned!!! I hope this helps someone who is struggling with thumping in their ear.

Thumping is from compression of the internal jugular vein which is a common problem patients who hinge at the neck and have atlas torsion of C1 C2 - medium atlantoaxial joints problems. Your treatment will take pressure off the vertebral and jugular veins as well as neck and shoulder muscle tension and thyroid - thus thumping should disappear.

 

Thank you very much for this info! I've had tinnitus for a long time now, but I started to get the vibrating/thumping again a few days ago. And my spine feels really tight, so I had a feeling it's related to that. I'm going to go to a chiropractor, or maybe a massage therapist, and hopefully that will help!

 

Having same issue, let me know the results. What triggered it for you, or was it random? Mine sounds like a reverberating echo type bass sound that pulses in the ear. Feels like something is spasming. When it gets really intense, like If I get upset or start rubbing the ear to much, or drive, it will increase in intensity and become a continuous vibrating tone until it settles.

This started the day after my grandfather died and using a new type of molding earplug in the ear that seemed to have made a pressure type feeling in my ear which triggered the vibration and has been almost 24h since, with very brief periods of no pulsing.

I've also noticed spasms around my body more too.

Strangely this condition I had off and on a few years ago, but only lasted seconds to minutes and never became this severe and long lasting.

 

It just started recently. It seems to be related to my upper back/spine, etc. My desk at work is too high, so my arms are constantly being raised while I type and use the mouse. Also, my pillow seemed too low, so I think my neck was being stretched the wrong way. I've switched to a different pillow for the last 2 nights and I think it's helping.
I don't know for sure if this is what was causing the vibrations in my ear, but this morning I don't have it. And I have 3 days off work now, so we shall see if it stays away. My tinnitus was really loud yesterday too, but today it seems quieter.

 

Interesting. I think you may have it from C1 and C2 vertebrae issues as that seems to be documented as a cause and you seem to have issues with your neck. If you get that aligned and fixed I bet it would help.

May I ask what exactly you feel/hear as your symptoms. Was it similar to my description or different?

 

I personally think some Middle ear muscle problems are a combination of hearing damage and jaw/cervical issues.

The connection is still a mystery and needs more research

It's hard to describe the sound. Sort of like vibrating construction going on outside. It seems to be different all the time. But I haven't had it all day today. Keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way. And I hope yours goes away too!

 

What makes you suggest hearing damage? None of my major noise incidents ever had an effect.

No change, sounds like constant low rumble in the background.

 

So intensity can change (when it gets worse do you feel it more intensely?) and the sound, and you can go some periods without it, correct? Is there any slight soreness in ear and tightness at times too? Does your ear pop and crackle a bit at all when swallowing consistently or yawning?

Any Eustachian Tube issues?

Any changes for you? I had a few weeks of it being more off and on, thought there was progress. Last week it's been doing it more. My A.C unit outside my window which vibrates when on sets off the ear, and driving does it again, so it's regressing back again.

Not sure how much more I can take of this sadly.
