      Hi, Rameek,

I'm so sorry you're having this problem! It isn't fun to hear a whistling sound in your ears all of a sudden, and, yes, it is very upsetting, too. Doctors don't really understand what causes the ringing a lot of the time, either. It's possible that your whistling/ringing sound will calm down in time, since you've only had it for a few weeks.

I've had tinnitus for a long time myself. Mine was originally caused by loud noise. At first, the tinnitus was bad, and hard to get used to. But after awhile, I found that if I didn't pay too much attention to it, it faded into the background. You might try looking at some of the other posts on this website. There are some very good suggestions for things that can help you cope with the problem, such as music you can download to listen to when you go to sleep.

Are you having more trouble during the day, or at night? If you can keep some background sounds around you all the time, it really helps.

Please don't think that your life is over because of tinnitus!! There is a lot of research being done on possible cures for tinnitus, and it won't be too long until they find a drug or a treatment that will work. Keep checking Tinnitus Talk for updates and information.

Also, it's possible you could have a condition called hyperacusis, in which you are highly sensitive to sound. Did you say that the whistling sound gets worse only after hearing noise at a certain pitch?

All of the members here at Tinnitus Talk have some form of tinnitus, and we're here to share our feelings and thoughts. We care, and don't want you to give up! Please keep us posted on how you're doing!

It does sound like you are sensitive to sounds. That could be hyperacusis. I know that it causes you a lot of anxiety, and it is very hard to deal with. Tinnitus does sound like the chirping of birds to some people, and it may be hard to tell if the bird sound is in your head, or is a real sound outside.

No, I must admit I'm not young; young-at-heart, maybe! I'm 65 years old, and I've had tinnitus for a long time. Mine got worse recently (within the last 2 years), and has been very hard to deal with. It's gotten a little bit better lately, though. I have been using a sound therapy CD, which has helped, and I listen to music a lot, too, so that I don't have complete silence around me. I also take herbs and vitamins, which help, too.

Does anyone out there have more information for this young man about hyperacusis?

Rameek, don't give up, and try to keep pleasant sounds (like music) around you all the time, including when you are trying to go to sleep at night. You may find that your tinnitus gets a bit quieter in time; try to pay less attention to it, if that is possible. That really helps! Please keep us posted on your progress.
