Hey guys, I don't have tinnitus but I was reading a book and stumbled across a possible tinnitus treatment method that you might find useful. It won't cost you any money or require any supplies, you'll just have to read some links and try massaging yourself.

The theory is that tinnitus can sometimes be caused by trigger points in your muscles. Anyway, if you read this link, it's a book on trigger points that mentions tinnitus maybe being caused by trigger points in the masseter, temporalis, and lateral pterygoid muscles. And here are instructions on massaging those muscles.

So, I recommend you read all the links I posted and try massaging yourself for maybe 10-20 minutes and see if you notice anything. Even if you notice that it briefly makes your tinnitus worse, that will tell you that trigger points are involved--trigger points often hurt more before they get better; they're weird that way.

Thanks for posting. I have had tinnitus in my left ear for nearly a year now, and have also been treated for TMJD during that time. It took some time to link the two problems, but I'm now reasonably sure that's what it is. I've read Claire Davies' book on trigger point massage (especially the passages linking lateral pterygoid trigger points with tinnitus) and I've also been seeing a massage therapist 2x a week for facial massage. She tells me that she can indeed feel a tight not in the lateral ptergyoid, unfortunately it is stubbornly refusing to release. The T gets worse a day or two after a treatment and then subsides somewhat for a day or two after that, and then seems to return to its usual level. I'm hoping that if I stick with it it will reduce permanently.

Very thorough, and you might find some spots you didn't know about.

Mind you, I'm not a believer that trigger point can cure tinnitus in most cases, but it did seem to relieve my hyperacusis, which was worse than the sounds.

@rtwombly Thanks very much for sharing, this is excellent. Should be very useful for identifying possible trigger points.

Tiggier point may work for those with having problems with muscles.. not sure it will work for everyone esp with T.
I used yo do trigger point self massage while lifting heavy weight at gym. But have to be thought by professional if not might cause more damage if done wrongly. .
