My tinnitus is louder. Thought it was a spike but not lowering. Any tips on coping?
      Thanks everyone...

Hey @Leah: First, if you can... try to calm yourself (I know, easy to say, tough to do). Panic and anxiety only makes tinnitus worse. Try breathing exercises, meditation, taking walks or exercise, doing things you enjoy with others.

So: How long has it been louder? Spikes can last awhile, as many here have reported. But remind yourself that there is no reason to believe your tinnitus will remain permanently louder. Mine often fluctuates -- and it can be really annoying, sometimes for days on end. But it always goes back down eventually.

@Leah ....I've been through the same thing myself. Having an unusually long spike made me think that it was my new and permanent base that I would have for the rest of my life. Very scary when it's at a 9-10 severity level . However, it did return to my former base.

Remember that anxiety and fear exacerbate a T condition and can therefore sustain a spike to some degree. The best thing you can do is try to calm yourself down by repeating reassuring words such as, "Although it's tough going right now it's only temporary and it will soon pass." Additionally, by using relaxation aids & techniques that have worked for you in the past.

I had a spike a few years ago that I was sure was permanent. I was around very very loud music and I knew my fragile ears couldn't take it. This sounds crazy but I put poly cotton balls in my ears for weeks and this increased the T, I knew it would. But I also knew that when I started to hear a little improvement it was time to take the cotton out , and at this point my ears would be ready to "Welcome" the outside world and ignore the T. I've done that trick since '74 every couple years. So far it's worked every time when I get a big spike going. It was something I just learned from trial and error.

Mask your T at all times. Avoid quite rooms. At night turn on heater. Use masking apps on smartphone or play sound healing music.

My T has lowered after I got lumbar puncture, but my T is due to assault/ear infection.

Right now my T is 3/10 on annoying scale. Have T since past 6 months. Do you know any events that led up to your T like noise, loud music, head injury?

Once again thank you all, yesterday was so, so hard. Had apt with Psychologist today and talked about CBT.
He is part of a tinnitus team at the Cleveland clinic. I have tried all the other avenues and now the road ends here with him. Couple thoughts though, he told me not to protect my ears from the treadmill, blow dryer and screaming babies.
That gives me pause because I know they can cause a spike.
Wish I could do more than to say thank you, I was in such a bad place yesterday and so grateful you were all there for me. Hope you are all doing well today. hugs
