My 86 year-old father has tinnitus. He wakes from a sound sleep once or twice each night, thinking that there is a humming noise and vibration coming from his upstairs neighbor's apartment. As a result, he has become very cross with his neighbor, thinking it's a deliberate disturbance. I'm trying to determine if it's my father's imagination or if this sensation could be caused by his tinnitus? Has anyone else had a similar experience? Thank you for any advice you can provide.

Yes this could very well be tinnitus. Has he experience any hearing loss?

Yes, he does have hearing loss, but refuses to wear hearing aids. He has tried them, but he says they bother him.

Tinnitus accompanies hearing loss in 70% of cases and then again, at his age, it could be something completely different. Maybe you can talk to his doctor about these occurrences and see what options you have.
