I need a hairdresser for my wedding and emailed and called the place I want for a quote and 2 weeks later no reply. I am willing to spend a lot, I just dont get it.

Well, yes, being transformed from first world to third world (and you had described one sign of that) is unique to the "first world." The guiltier people like you feel, the faster we are becoming a third world country. So don't worry, soon there will be many more problems for us to deal with, and the problem you described won't seem so unusual.
