Dignitas doesn't offer their services to those with tinnitus. Someone from TT has tried to go down that path - didn't work.

Havent you only got T for about 2 months? Way to early to consider euthanasia imo. There is still a good chance it could get better overtime.

T isn't my only problem, but yes.

I still want to register with them, the euthanasia laws here and at home are barbaric.

So how does this work? Dignitas is a euthanasia place? You pay $10,500 and wait till you get a call that you in come in?? Where is this at??

No one fucking puts those stories out that for an action to be done. Instead, they talk about habituations and hide the suicide stories.

It's an assisted suicide place in Switzerland. Anyone can go from around the world, however, so it's available to anyone who can travel there.

If you live in Switzerland, the assisted suicide takes place at your home.

If you're from abroad, you travel to their flat/facility.

The key term here is assisted suicide. They provide you with a poison that you drink mixed with water, this can also be fed to you in a tube. You ultimately have to be able to drink the poison or open the valve to your tube, they can't do it for you, as this would be illegal under Swiss law.

You have to first be a member of their group and then you need to be assessed at least twice in person for suitability. The whole process takes about 3 months or so. Some lurid stories have given the impression you can merely want to get euthanised one day and you can be on a plane the next. Not so.

Assisted suicide is offered to members who suffer from:
    • a disease which will lead to death
    (terminal illness), and/or
    • an unendurable incapacitating disability, and/or
    • unbearable and uncontrollable pain

The 10,500 Swiss francs covers everything, prep, doctor's consultation, funeral and cremation, all the official paperwork.

Yeah, the BTA don't really do a good enough job of highlighting the awful extremes, neither do a lot of the medial. Probably partially because they don't want to inspire more.

Thanks, I will. Like I said above, it is not the only problem I have, but it is the most recent and therefore the most acute.

I still think joining Dignitas is a good thing.

@Drone Draper Who decides if the disability is "unendurable"? Doctor or patient?

I believe the unendurable bit is the doctor's verdict, however:

Contrary to a widely-held opinion, people suffering from mental health problems normally have sufficient capacity of discernment to decide whether they
would like to continue living or end their life.

Therefore, and as a general rule, they are entitled to ask for an accompanied suicide and receive assistance just as much as people suffering from physical health problems, in order to avoid the high risk of failure

The same applies to healthy people who wish to end their life because they feel that it has become too arduous for them due to old age. There are no rational reasons to patronise these people through paternalism.

So I think if you implored them that you should receive AS due to the awful nature of your illness, I think they would be compassionate.

@jay777 - Apparently the mixture of poison is doesn't taste very nice. They suggest you could eat some sort of fruit immediately after - I don't know why you'd be so concerned about taste, as you'll fall asleep and die within minutes.

I guess we could fly out and down them like shots and have a bite of lime afterwards, like a tequila slammer.

Why is it even anyone else's business why someone wants to die? Sell the stuff to whoever wants it. Maybe have a 24 hour waiting period (like with guns & marriage) to avoid drunken stupidity. And after that, let it be "my body, my choice."

So the planet is overpopulated? There's not enough food, housing, jobs, health care for everyone? But if you want to die, they won't give you a damn suicide pill? The logic escapes me.

I rather email a certain guy in Mexico and pay 500 dollars for a peaceful death then paying 10,500 .......to be completely honest.....But as of now, I intend to stick around......for now.

I agree, I think people should have access to euthanasia like they do in places like the Netherlands and Switzerland. We need to end the taboo about it.

There are so many horrific cases of people trying to commit suicide when they are brought back to life against their wishes. We should all have the right to die with dignity.

I think why I would want Dignitas is that I know it would be painless and legal. I wouldn't want to engage in something that could send the other parties to prison.

I think that's exactly it: a taboo. The powers-that-be will kill us slowly with GMOs, BPAs, Monsanto, global warming, war, etc., but won't give us a voluntary, painless, dignified way to end our lives at the time of our choosing. Perhaps it's the autonomy that makes it taboo.
