100%. I just registered with Dignitas last week. I know they turn down patients for T, but equally I know that it may be something I will use one day for another illness.

Agreed but even when it is legal, it is very expensive - a lady in my country went to dignitas......I think she had ALS.....she said that the overall cost was over 15.000 USD

"DIGNITAS normally requires advance payment. The total payable is 10’500 Swiss Francs if DIGNITAS is asked to make all the necessary funeral and administrative arrangements; or 7’500 Swiss Francs if DIGNITAS is not required to take care of the funeral or administrative/official affairs."

I'd pay by credit card. When the bill comes, the debt collectors won't be able to get me.

"Pentobarbital of Sodium – also called Sodium Pentobarbital or Natrium-Pentobarbital (NaP) – is an approved sleeping and narcosis drug. As it is alkaline and does not taste pleasant, something sugary may be drunk or eaten immediately afterwards."

    Man, this poison tastes terri...

I don't understand why there's no alternative way to get this stuff. Is it really that difficult to make something that euthanizes people?

It's utter nonsense. When someone has to make the painful decision to put down their pet when the pain is unbearable, you can go to the vet. But you can't do the same for yourself.

Philip Nitschke is a physician and euthanasia advocate in Australia, he was recently in the media for making a suicide machine. Back in the day he used to anonymously send out suicide kits to people who were desperate. The authorities eventually found out and he was labeled a murderer. He has now fled the country and lives abroad. Such an awesome guy.

With Dignitas, you have to do it yourself, e.g. you must drink the poison yourself or open your feeding tube to let the poison in. That way, it's legally OK.

Googling this dude. Dr. Jack Kevorkian also faced nonsense, including jail time for his work in assisted suicide.

If this doesn't sound totally stupid, I think voluntary euthanasia would actually reduce suicidal thoughts. Just knowing there's a way out if needed would be enough to calm people and help them cope better.

Agree as well. Knowing I could have the right to end it painlessly would be a comforting thought.

It's like having pain pills. You can deal with pain when it's at manageable levels because you know that the pill is there if the pain gets too high. But if you don't have the pain pills, you can't even handle manageable pain because all you can think of is, what if it gets too high.

Yup. The finality of the euthanasia option would work well for me in this instance. I can probably manage what I have now for the rest of my life, but a sudden surge to the hell that Bam or dpdx describes is more pain than I could live with.
