@PortugalTheMan That's a really good starting point. I firmly believe genetics are a huge predisposition in developing tinnitus - it runs in my and many others families. But I believe most people can develop tinnitus if they suffer a powerful acoustic trauma that blows out a bigger part of hearing suddenly.

My father has a hearing loss, my grandfather hardly heard anything and didn't have tinnitus.
but I think I would go through seeing the genes or what is different between these people and us, and trying to change it so that we don't have tinnitus.

Does tinnitus have a logic? does there have to be? everything in life is math :)

I think it might be about 1) speed of onset of hearing loss. If you develop hearing loss over time you might have lower chances of getting T than with a rapid onset 2) stress during onset of hearing loss

Man, I would be quite surprised if you had Ménière's. It's rather rare. Plus, you do not have vertigo / dizziness. In Italian we say "non fasciarti la testa prima di averla rotta".

It can indeed be quite manageable, like @aot says. Even more so, researchers in the Netherlands are currently working on a relatively new technique (clipping the endolymphatic duct) to effectively treat (maybe even fix) Ménière's disease

In May I started taking flunarizine and had relief from tinnitus, I started to have tinnitus that I only heard in quiet rooms.
In June I stopped taking it, and after 1 month I got loud tinnitus again.

I went back to taking flunalizine now and it got better again.
On Tuesday I had an appointment with my ENT to tell me how it was. And he asked to do an electrocochleogram (ECOG) because he suspects that I have meniere at a very early stage.

@PortugalTheMan that is probably the best thing to do to help our condition. I enjoy talking to most of the people on the forum, but it's not always a positive place when you are hurting. Keep the faith, take good care of yourself, sending prayers for health and healing.

I agree with buttercake. We can’t control tinnitus but we can control our reactions. I’m back and forth from not caring to it being devastating

Months are indeed the SHORTEST unit of time you can go by with this stuff. Day-to-day means *nothing*.

If in our day-to-day we are careful with our ears, it will help our months! ;)

True - I meant day-to-day ups and downs, but day-to-day behaviors are of course a different story.

Some problem with your jaw maybe? Just a guess though.

Mine disappears while I'm eating and comes back immediately after I finish.

I've been going with an improvement. The stress caused by tinnitus has disappeared, and the tinnitus has reduced a little after four months.
Since it was 4 months always with the volume increasing, I see this month as a small progress.

The only thing I took was Flunarizine, it seems to have done something to my tinnitus.

The way I often see it is that commonly, T gets quieter in volume or the sound changes to become more tolerable over time for most people. Mine went from ringing to soft quiet static.

My dad has hearing loss. He had very mild loss in the military and developed more from occupational hearing loss. He only has mild fleeting tinnitus rarely. He didn't know he had it until I asked him about it and he said now that I listen for I think I do.

Absolutely not. There are theories though, but no certainty whatsoever as far as I know. Dr. Will Sedley suspects that people with more predictive brains are more likely to develop tinnitus.
