I’m nowhere near a veteran, but I went from one tone in both ears to 3-5 different sounds in either ear. This is only 6 months in and I really took the beginning for granted haha, DUMB BRAIN AND EARS!
Answer: because you're in your first year of tinnitus.
This is how it's going to be. You're just going to have to walk the same tightrope all of us have had to; of protecting, without overprotecting to the extreme, and know that eventually, new tones or no new tones, you stop noticing and/or caring.
@Damocles How do I habituate when every week it is worse than the previous? Every little change that happens to my tinnitus seems it is here to stay. Tones that used to come and go have been exacerbating by a slight Valsalva maneuver. New tones on top have emerged when I had a fight the other day with my family, although I did plug my ears when someone was raising their voice.
I have a "broadband" (hard to describe, it sounds like an echo) moderate tinnitus that can be heard in a 85 dB airplane, and every now and then I get also the pure tone. I have / had also: mechanical clicks (they come and go), chirps (they come and go), other chirps, random bursts of sounds (every second week or so).
@Freerunner I do not have hyperacusis, but I have some form of TTTS that comes and goes. Also, my tinnitus is not reactive. I did not really improve since the onset one (exact) year ago, but I also believe that my case is somehow special since my hearing was damaged while I was sleeping (if you check out my Introduction thread, you'll see that I have linked a couple of papers about noise insults during sleep)
Did any if you experience a change of tones in Tinnitus, that later subsided or faded to the background? How long does it take?
Right now my ears are screaming with two new high pitched sounds which keep on getting worse. I think I am especially bad case - I did not find a single story in the forum which mentioned so much tones within the first month...
@Freerunner im still new 7 months in. Both ears ring sometimes light and sometimes loud. Left ear has a faint or very intrusive buzzsaw and right random pinging or fluttering. I’m very reactive and have distortions.
Some days or moments is like tinnitus doesn’t exist others it’s torment, most nights I awaken to loud spikes.
lol @Freerunner. All the time man. If you look through old posts of mine, you'll see I once had tinnitus that sounded like a f*cking conversation in my ear, for almost an entire year. Was creepy as hell.
I can attest that tones do come and go. I raked up 10 tones at one point spanning both ears, which later went down to what I now consider 4. If you can protect and avoid to get more tones, then I think yours can improve.
I too can confirm what @Stacken77 and @Damocles have said. My onset started in April and I’ve had many tones as well as musical tinnitus that have come and gone. it’s a process that’s going to take time to manage. First year is indeed tough and I’m still struggling at times.
