      Cause of Tinnitus:
      no idea
I came upon this forum accidentally while investigating some goofball called Tim Seaton who appears to be running a scam on tinnitus suffers-- simply out of curiosity since I once had tinnitus.

I am 65. In excellent condition physically. I am saddened that so many people have suffered with this malady while there seems to be only random solutions but FOR ME Acupuncture really did work. About 8 or 9 years ago I got Tinnitus and it started keeping me up at night. That was the only time it bothered me. Not one to EVER use hokey solutions like acupuncture, complaints to my wife resulted in pressure to try acupuncture and, grudgingly, I tried it after Googling what seemed endless scams and not being willing to try them. I went 3 times over 3 weeks. Each time the practitioner used successively larger diameter needles. About 3 days after the last treatment it just went away. I had one recurrence since but it went away on its own after a few days.

Suggestion for the folks who run this forum:
      1) gather data on the success stores and publish it on the forum(place on top page banner!)
      2) categorize it: numbers and percent of people with success for each type, age of people if available, general health and well being of person, time since last occurrence, % effectiveness of people who appear to have actually tried a treatment
      3) list out the confirmed or highly likely scams

Doing this will greatly help folks who land here and focus them to a cure for THEM.

Note that from the few minutes of reading on this forum I have done it appears there is no ONE cure, but for different "types" of people there are cures. Gathering this data could also focus a Phd student to do a truly focussed study and find the critical variables that can lead to overall success with medical credentials that doctors trust and can recommend.

This is a wildly helpful suggestion. Presenting this information as a banner/in an area where readers can access it immediately would be fantastic.

      Hey @Brian Schreiber ,

That's amazing that you were able to get rid of a T that you've had for 8 years! I have a few questions that I wonder if you could answer?

      - What type of T sound did you have? (high pitched hissing? Tone? Rumble? In the "head" and/or in the "ears"? etc)
      - What type of practitioner performed the acupuncture / what "style" was it?
      - Where were the needles placed on your body, and how many and for how long per session?
      - Do you know how your hearing has been throughout these eight years? Have you had above average hearing loss?

      Thanks!

I would like to know the answers too. He did not say he had tinnitus for eight years, but had it eight years ago. Worth a try. It's it's not really all that intrusive, but would like to know more from Brian. I see he just joined at the end of June 2016 and this is his only post or comment.

@gary Yeah - not eight years! Thanks for pointing that out. I realized it was his only post and too bad - he made some good points. Would've liked to have heard more from him! I do think it's worth a try to get acupuncture from an experienced certified practitioner.

      Very loud noise
I as well had tinnitus and ETD since 2012 (got them from a very loud plane, while I was in the air force), my tinnitus was pretty loud and over the years it gotten worse and at some point my hearing decreased as well. I decided one year ago to try acupuncture to fix all these problems. To my surprise, after every session when I got home, the first thing I could notice is that my tinnitus got much quieter, and it was keep getting quieter after every night I slept for the next 2-3 days.
In average I did/do two sessions a month.

Today my tinnitus is very very quiet even at night, my ETD is completely gone and my hearing has vastly improved.
It saddens me how the doctors keep saying that there is no cure for these problems, while there is a very simple "cure" to these problems that has no side effects at all..

I tried Acupuncture but did not help me . I had needles for a knee injury and it worked for that but sadly not for the Tinnitus.
I wonder where the needles were put in this case

Well i'm not an acupuncturist, but I can tell you that she (the acupuncturist) put 3-4 needles to each ear, when one needle for each ear was aimed for my jaw to fix the ETD, the rest were to fix my hearing loss and tinnitus.

Of course it doesn't end there, she also put needles along my arms and legs, and also a few on my neck.
After some sessions she started using bigger needles which made the recovery much faster!
So try to ask for larger diameter needles.

Also, I advise you to ask the therapist to twist and push in the needles because the effect is much bigger.

      I hope it helps :)

Also, I forgot to mention that the needles weren't on the ear itself, they were on my face very close to the ear.

@Brian Schreiber and @Guy214 Congrats on your remission. Glad to hear acupuncture worked for someone. I have a friend with Ulcerative Colitis who goes to acupuncture, and he suggested I try it for T. His acupuncturist has two patients now that visit her for it, so I'm trying to remain positive about it. At the very least it will mitigate the stress factor, and maybe help me cope better. I had a recent flare-up in my left ear due to me trying to clean it with an infant syringe, which I've used in the past, but I must have flushed too hard with the water, and now I'm kicking myself for causing this to happen. I'm trying to remain positive though and draw inspiration and hope from everyone on here. I agree that it's a great idea that Brian had on collecting the data on success stories.

Loved life at an advanced age until suddenly hit with Pulsating tinnitus in August 2016. Thought it could have been two cortisone injections in my left knee, krill oil I had taken, or Nasocort I was using at the time. MRI normal, carotid artery normal, seeing an acupuncturist. ENT says live with it! I did have severe head trauma from a golf ball in 1997 but never experienced tinnitus, just severe nerve damage. After tinnitus began, I now have tingling in my feet and can't sleep well. Taking Xanax but it limits my quality of life. Any suggestions would be appreciated

      @Pat Pilcher

Sorry to hear about the issues you are now experiencing. Just be super careful with the medications as they can become habit forming. I use a 5mg Valium but only on my worst of worst days and only in the evening when I have no plans. I am totally deaf today and suffer the loudest damn tinnitus you can imagine. No way to even try to mask it with no hearing. What helps me sleep is a little walk in the evenings if the weather is half decent and then taking a 3mg melatonin supplement that I can purchase here off the shelf. Some countries you need a prescription for melatonin. I typically dissolve the little minty tablet under my tongue about 30 minutes before bedtime. This really helps me fall asleep even with this nasty noise in my head. I never really sleep longer than 5 hours at a time even using melatonin but do my best to try to nap during the day for an hour now and then. Sooner or later my body needs more rest and I get a full 7 to 8 hours. I feel no side effects with melatonin and my head is clear. Might be something to consider for sleep???

Get better Pat and keep us all posted on your ups and downs.

      Regards,

      Mike

@Pat Pilcher hey Pat, you should get your b12 levels checked to make sure you are not suffering from low b12 symptoms, also get your thyroid levels checked too, low b12 and low or too high thyroid can cause Tinnitus, if you've have a head trauma you should also go to a NUCCA chiropractor to see if you have any upper cervical problems, as Tinnitus can also be caused by problems in the neck.

Good luck with the acupuncture. I tried it and it did nothing, though I did learn about Chinese medicine. One part of the treatment was Chinese herbs. I don't like taking things I don't know about so I refused that part of the treatment, but it's possible that whatever is in the Chinese herb blend might help. The blend the acupuncturist recommended was called "Calm ES".

I am super jaded at this point , I feel like chinese/eastern medicine is useless.
Most if it is based on some woodoo and no proof , I know we have this image of this wise chinese dude with the long white beard curing people with needles and chi ..fact is , they don't seem to have any "proper" medicine and therefore turn to this woodoo style of medicine.

Having said that , I am going for acupuncture , because ...why not :p

Great post, and I agree with a lot of it. What I've realized is that tinnitus is such an extremely complex condition that scientists are still learning lots about it on the reg. Your tinnitus took the acupuncture well - somehow your nervous responded extremely well to it. I have my own pet theories why acupuncture seems to work so great for some people... I believe the nervous system can be strategically manipulated to correct itself. That is, to say, stressing it in certain ways may get certain behaviors out of it, which is why acupuncture works for some people. Interestingly, you're the 2nd guy I've heard of in a week to mention that acupuncture cleared it up completely for him (he had it 8th months, but same result). Even though I know a bunch of people who got no help from it, we really need to get a better understanding of the makeup of the different varieties of tinnitus. That would let us correlate treatments to them. Seems like you rolled the dice well here and that's just great news.

Major congrats on finding something that worked for you. And holy crap, if that's you in your profile pic you are a legit monster for a 65 year old dude. Probably could brawl a couple people at once perhaps if needed.

      Tinnitus Since:

      Cause of Tinnitus:
      myoclonus
Sorry for my bad English but it will be better try to write and may be to help to some people rather than keep the silence.
I have so called pulsatile (or in other definition tinnitus related myoclonus) in my right ear since 7 years.
I tried all the way medicines for epileptic disease in some periods helped but not always. When I felt that nothing helps I had the operation (cutting the two little muscles in the mid ear). The professor ( a famous and experienced surgeon ) knew exactly what to do and did the operation well but unfortunately also this didn't help me. It was not succesfull.
I know that this operation helped to many others who suffered from the same problem but there is a certain percentage can not be cured. I was one of them.
I must say during all this period I tried acupuncture as well but this didn't help too. The one who does the acupuncture to me is a very good and very experienced doctor of medicine, He knows the anatomy and the meridians very well. But as I said did not help. After the operation I decided two things: not to take any medicines any more and clean my body and try acupuncture once again.
I went to the same acupuncture expert who took care of me and decide to explain the reasons of my tinnitus better. I knew that he is a medicine doctor and will understand me properly. I told him that this is actually a brain problem. Actually it is a some kind of epilepsy problem. An electric problem in the brain cause to spasm in the muscles of the ear. He was angry with me !! he said that I should explain the reasons of the tinnitus in this way before. He placed the needles in different places. After 3-4 visits I got a big silence !!!!!!.
He said that most of the people who implement acupuncture don't know well what they are doing. They don't know the map of the nervous system and the meridians. He says Actually this is like mathematics you should know properly what you are doing.
The problem is the acupuncture do not solve the main problem (the reasons -the brain problem-cause the spasm in the ear) but this is like a medicine for the headache !!. The energy I get in to my brain by acupuncture can last (hold) 1-2 weeks then the problem comes back so I have to continue having the treatment. But is it not worthy to have back my silence ??

So my suggestion to those HAVE THE SAME SORT OF TINNITUS like I have:
first find a REAL professional acupuncture expert (who knows really what he is doing) and then ask him treatment for epilepsy.
      Good Luck

Ditto on being jaded. However, I'm glad to hear you are going to give it a shot because even though it may not help the tinnitus, it is very relaxing. You may enjoy it and it may relieve some of the day's stress. In addition, they may put a mineral lamp on your feet and the mineral lamp feels nice.

And I'm curious to hear if having an acupuncturist who actually has T and knows what he's doing helps. The person I went to read about it and knew where to place the needles based on her research, but may not have been as well versed in where to place the needles for tinnitus.

And finally, Susan Shore (researcher) mentioned acupuncture as a possible remedy based on the presumption that correctly placed needles might have some affect on inhibiting the nerves.
