Genius post Marie. One of those "you have to be there (metaphorically)" moments. I wonder how many viewers even understood. I wouldn't have three years ago.

No. it's not. This scene symbolises some kind of madness imo. The sounds forms a sort of musical beat in his head. It's not that they are too loud or painful. Brian Wilson suffers from mental illness, not hearing problems.

Brian Wilson has had extreme hearing loss in one ear since he was young. So would not be surprised if he also had tinnitus. But he also was seriously mentally ill.,

With what most of us have been through, I could deduce that tinnitus/hyperacusis formed a big part of his mental illness.

By the way, while I don't want to hijack this thread: If any of you are Brian Wilson fans, you must watch this amazing BBC video showcasing what I consider his most beautiful song. It was the "first dance" song I picked for my wedding. Wilson is in the video. He is an amazing talent, despite all he had to overcome, and personally an inspiration to me to continue making music. Hope to see him when he is here this fall.

I think tinnitus and hyperacusis can lead to Anxiety and Depression.

but not to other big illness that has to do with brain chemicals...problems like bipolar, schizophrenia etc.
no matter how big the trauma is, some people are just not "prone" to develop mental illness.

Maybe. Certainly back in his youth, mental illness wasn't really talked about, and tinnitus/hyperacusis seemingly even less so. I could imagine the pressure on him having to keep going out there, unable to escape from it, surrounded by expectations from so many directions, and I think about how my own life went, and the posts of others and what they've experienced, then I could imagine easily how he would lose it completely, especially if there was a pre-disposition toward mental illness. Sometimes it just takes the right trigger, and T & H in an uncaring environment certainly make good triggers.
