Hello Everyone! Its been almost about a month since I started experiencing tinnitus and im glad that the doctor has said it is a eustachian tube blockage. Unfortunately I suffered a cold 2 weeks after hearing the news which made it worse!

So know I have to wait longer for it to go away :( and i may be risky here but I'm going on a road trip in a week from Dallas to Phoenix and I'm gonna get bored I'm sure of it. So I'm thinking of listening to loud music to kill time with some earplugs. But I'm a little bit concerned because I'm going to be sitting right next to the speakers in the car.

Is this safe for me? I have some ear plugs that reduce 23 decibels if that should help and not do any damage. Please help me out here thank you.

      Hi Jason,

      Welcome aboard!

I would not recommend listening to music via headphones/earbuds. Listening to music is fine, just at a safe volume.

Depends on how quiet the car is
A loud 70db car with music whihc goes to 85db for hours may not be a great idea
My car does 60db at highway speed

It's likely not safe. If you do get worse from listening to loud music even with ear plugs, don't come back complaining here please. We warned you.

How do I measure the decibels of every day sounds? How do I know the decibel level of my tinnitus?

I think it would be ok with earplugs, but for limited times. Remember that the road noise alone can be 80+ decibels on some highways. I would not crank it above 85 for any reason.

There is a nice app called Decibel that you can install on an android phone and likely an Iphone as well. Just look and see when it reaches 80 decibels. That's when it's time to stop turning up whatever you are turning up, earplugs or not.

Why not just listen at a moderate level?

Loud music in a car is, not a good idea. If you are the one in control , then do not blast your music. It will bother your ears and your hearing and tinnitus could get worst.....

You don't necessarily have to play it loud to kill time.. ;)

Yeah, why earplugs + loud music, when you could enjoy the trip with soft music and no plugs.

      Funny thread.

I listen to music while driving all the time. I find it a nice distraction :).

Again, this is at lower volumes.

Let me tell yeah this: I do road trips a lot. Sometimes I even go for 2000 miles or so in just 3 days.
I use 32 DB foam earplugs and music is sometimes loud for couple hours or so because other members in car wants it loud. When music is loud, Sound level is about 80 DB (My phone has app and it shows). Earplugs cut it about 32 DB, meaning I am getting 80-32 = 48DB in to ears, not bad at all but keep in mind that noise still passes through bone (Meaning: put ear plugs and eat some crunchy stuff.... super loud because ear plugs are stopping noise from outside of ears but cannot stop noise coming from vibrations, it passes through body and bone)
So, I would recommend not to go over 80 DB at all in any case and u must protect ears with plugs even at 80DB in road trips. No exception! Save ur self!!
Its only my experience and not from educational or trusted sources. Have fun and stay chill!!
      Enjoy your roadtrip!
