      Cause of Tinnitus:
Music and recently a simple cold made things really worse
      Hi folks,

I have high pitch T (9500 -1000hz) for 15 years and learned to live with it (see my other post on this) but I had a simple winter cold and also a total burnout a few weeks ago and I observed a light new T when sleeping. Since then (almost two months ago) I visited a few doctors and osteopath, but have a hard time to find a good specialist here in the Bordeaux area who has good knowledge of T, the last one I visited said I was a deaf musician (which is wrong because from 20h to 7khz I hear perfectly well) my general doctor cleaned my ears a little and since I observed another new sound, but the problem is that everything became worse since two months and while the new sounds were not that hard in the beginning, now when I wake up in the morning (I have nightmares every night since a few months) these are very loud and then fade away to a more acceptable volume but it takes more and more time each day to fade out.

I have to admit that last three years have been overly stressful and I had 2 burnouts without any real break to cure and I continued to work each time because otherwise my whole family wouldn't be able to survive, with 1 or 2 weeks of vacation with family (which with 3 children from 3 to 14 years isn't really vacation) and way too few sleep, add to that that we have to sleep in the living room/kitchen with my wife because we live in a very small home and we have slept two years near a refrigerator, in the beginning with ear plugs (which I have used over the last 15 years to be able to sleep) but since February I try to sleep without. I've also been angry quite a lot in the last months (due to lack of sleep and stress) and observed a lot of headaches prior to the new T's and a very low low blood pressure. Two months ago I was at 8.5 and now around 10, I've always had low blood pressure especially in stressful periods but I find them really on the too low side lately.

As I'm a musician, I noticed that the new pitches I have in my head are pitches from my refrigerator, exactly the same pitches or two pitches that are generated by the motor of my refrigerator, and while in the beginning one of them faded our when I was in rest position so it didn't bother my sleep, right now they are louder and louder and I have to take sleep pills to be able to sleep. What's really freaking me out now is that when I have a nightmare or when I wake up in the morning these T's are 10x or something even louder then when I go to bed, they happen to wake me up, why is this, how can things become so agressive during a sleep what happens to me and what can I do? I must say that last weeks have been overly difficult for us and this T is slowly destroying my whole life because now I have 3 T's to handle which is really hard. It's hard to take a break when you don't have the ressources to do so (money), I'm going to try a total break for two weeks with the help from a friend of us, but am really worried and wonder what could cause these spikes at night and what to do.

At some point I had the impression I could control one of the new T's and when completely calmed it was very low but as i so tired I can't meditate or anything else.

thanks for the help in advance,

      Hans

It could be stress and anxiety and while sleeping your clenching your jaw and putting pressure on your jaw joint that can cause tinnitus.....lots of love glynis

I don't have any info for you but I can relate. I was waking up panicking even before my T started. I was waking up with terrible pain from clenching my jaw so tight. I've been wearing a mouth guard the past couple of days but that doesn't stop me apparently. I'm going to try some muscle relaxers at night. Maybe you could try that too.

Your brain didn't record the refrigerator though. Low T sounds like a refrigerator I believe.

Sorry for the delay had some very hard week here trying several meds to get some sleep and reduce anxiety du to this new T cycle

yes I used 15 years ear plugs to sleep and then when I tried to stop this as I read it's not good and after a stressfull period I started to hear these new sounds. Now I'm using Zolpidem to sleep and Xanax before going to sleep, but I have those T spikes at night now which wake me up, this is really scary. I hope to find some way to get atural sleep, I'm doing sport everyday to reduce stress and anxiety which seems to help but I have the impression those meds are making things worse, thanks

I'm not sure anymore I believe at least one sounds is close to that one from the refrigerator but then it can be that as I hear that T sound in my head all the time I think it comes from the refrigerator. What really makes me sad is that since two months no doctor really helps anything else then proposing anti depression meds or sleeping meds, I must admit I was in a bad situation last week but I have so many side effetcs from those meds that it makes things worse for me and I have to go back to work next week otherwise my whole familly will be in trouble. thanks

I don't use earplugs to deal with the tinnitus, not sure how that would work. However, I have high pitched T (~14khz), and I sleep with earplugs sometimes when it's necessary to deal with external noises. For instance, my wife needed to get up ~4 hours earlier than I did today, so I popped a plug in and went back to sleep. Didn't even notice when she came through the room twice to use the shower... I'm going to hear the T all the time no matter what, so, if I wasn't comfortable sleeping through the T I suspect I would not sleep much at all. I tried that for a while and got 'tired' of it, if you'll indulge a pun.

@hve I have also noticed that one of my T frequencies seems to be exactly the same as what my fridge outputs, and the higher pitched tones are quite similar to the electronics noises I am exposed to all day. Hard to say if that means anything...

Sorry for the late reply it seems that there are so many things involved that can cause T it's really complicated. For my part, I stopped all meds and vitamines (has an overdose on magnesium and B6!!! be careful with this because it made things worse for me) and do more sport and exercise. During my last blood test yesterday all seemed normal except that my salt and iron in blood is on the very low side, as I have low blood pressure this may explain that I need more salt. I also know that some people have T because of low blood pressure (not just high pressure). I was really surprised to see my salt level so low, but then I go out jogging 3 times a week (~1 hour) and so I may consume more salt then other people. I'm going to try to change this and see what happens, for me the most irritating part is at night when my T starts to sound harder then during the day other other moments at night.
I'm also going to do a test to see if I don't have sleep apnea and I'm often tired when I wake up and my wife has mentioned a few times that I didn't respire correctly during my sleep.
