      Hello fellow sufferers!

Just discovered this site and though I would share my story...as well as look for tips and answers.

My problem has been complex and on going for around 18 months, but the root of the problem goes way back.

Around 8 years ago I was (foolishly) carry something upstairs when the most horrendous pain in 1 ear /side of face struck me down. The pain lasted for a few minutes then everything returned to normal. All was good for a few more years then around 5 years ago I started to get repeat episodes of this pain for no reason. As the years went on so these episodes increased. After a number of visits to various puzzled ENT consultants I finally had an MRI which showed up an ENORMOUS eustachian tube on that side. So it was thought it was the tube that was intererring with a nerve that was causing the pain. So it was decided that my consultant would try to 'shrink' the tube by way of an operation through my ear. In effect the outside ear was taken off and then he worked his way through the middle ear then through all the little bones to reach the eustachian tube. And this is where the constant tinnitus along with 75% hearing loss started. As for the pain attacks, well they stopped...for around 5 months then came back with a vengeance.

So I was then referred to a neurosurgeon, who decided it was Trigeminal NEURALGIA. In February I had major cranial surgery where he separated a number of compacted nerves and actually removing one completely as he believed it was these clashing with blood vessels and veins that was causing the pain attacks.

So 5 months later those attacks have gone. BUT the unrelenting tinnitus and frequent sharp twinges in the ear continue. Apparently I am left with a permanent hole in the ear drum and this continual racket in my ear which gets louder as it becomes more painful. I can also sence air flowing through the hole as I breath. Both these factors I find incredibly annoying. Also it always has a kind of blocked sensation.

So the question is does anyone else out there on this forum have anything similar?. Do you have any tips as to how to overcome the tinnitus.? Around 40% of the day i can ignore it, but that still leaves much of the day driving me mad !!

      Any views greatly appreciated.

You just wait until science releases methods to reduce tinnitus and hope they become available within the next five years to a decade until then we are all in a bad position by default but not hopeless.

Melatonin and Clonazepam as well as mindfulness and avoiding stress and loud noise may help somewhat reduce the volume of tinnitus. Masking with environmental noise is a good idea as well.
