I find that white noise always helps. Be it a fan of some sort or something you find online. I personally really like this nice little website http://mynoise.net/

We are designed to be comfortable around white noise. In the wild when we were tiny monkeys, predators often heard much better than we would. Sleeping near waterfalls or noisier places was ideal to avoid being heard. Those who didn't enjoy white noise as much didn't succeed as much evolutionarily.

Also in general you don't want to think about trying to sleep. Just relax and you'll fall asleep eventually. I might suggest looking into some mindfulness practice and some relaxation meditation. It's helpful too sometimes.

I LOVE THAT SITE. I use it constantly during the day. But when it comes to sleep, white noise isn't doing it for me anymore.

@Bertman: You also can try the TMSoft app, available for a small price for iPhones and iPads. It has more than 30 different sounds -- including white, blue and brown noise, all very different. You also can make mixes of different noises to see what makes your ears happy. Right now, I am using a mix of "air conditioner" and "running water."

My ears never have liked white noise. Brown is much better for me. But everyone is different.

@LadyDi Thanks for the suggestion. That app sounds very similar to the mynoise app I have on my phone, with customizable colour noises and nature noises. Unfortunately right now I am just playing youtube videos of white noise on my TV. I should probably figure out a better way..

For smartphones, I like Relax Melodies Premium. Best selection of sounds and can create mixes.

Hey @Bertman: You could buy one of those portable wireless "can" speakers that would sync with the mynoise app on your phone? They aren't expensive, very small but put out a decent amount of sound. I had one and used it all the time, until it finally broke. I need to replace it.

Oh, and also, at the suggestion of an inner ear surgeon who himself has tinnitus: During daytime hours at work, I alternate the nature/color noise tracks with very light classical music. Usually things performed by a small orchestra, or just with a piano or guitar. The surgeon said such music can be good for brain enrichment because it includes a wide variety of frequencies but is not distracting from whatever else you are doing.
