I've Had a Setback, Should I Use Prednisone?

Cause of Tinnitus
Noise Induced. Sudden burst in headphones.
Hi there all you Tinnitus Talk people!

I have learnt heaps of indispensable information about my tinnitus and hyperacusis from reading these forums since they started a couple of months ago, but this is my first post on the forum.

First, a bit about my tinnitus and hyperacusis.

My condition began with a loud burst of white noise in my headphones on the 6th of May. The instant ringing died down and went away for 3 weeks, and then returned as a mild high pitch ring (probably around 16khz, where above I can now no longer hear).

Mild hyperacusis began at this time too. I found that while it was still easy to do most things, there were somethings I could no longer do. Headphones at low volumes seemed to spike the T, and I could no longer use my studio monitors even at low volumes for the same reason. Over time I've realised that high frequencies (above 8khz specifically) seem to set it off, and that's why I was still able to listen to music on other less detailed speakers, especially if the tweeters weren't near my ears.

A month later I had a setback after going into a studio with a mix engineer to finish my bands EP. I wore -15db earplugs for most of the time, but the times I did take them out briefly to make critical decisions about the mix was enough to flare up my ears really bad. It didn't help that I came down with a flu at the same time. I was in bed for 3 days after the loudest ringing yet. And while it did settle down enough for me to be able to do many things again (with more protection needed of course, there was a period where my H was intense and I had to wear ear plugs in the shower or using the stove), there was a noticeable and somewhat permanent increase in my T, with more lower harmonics added to my high pitch tone. I learned to live with it as the T and H settled down again over a few weeks to a mild level and got on enjoying my life.

Fast forward to Monday 5 days ago. I spent 3 days using monitors at low volume with the high frequencies cut out thinking that these were the frequencies which would spike my T. I noticed some fatigue but felt confident in my progress and upon waking up in silence and going to sleep it didn't seem to be doing harm. on the last day - Saturday - I went to a loud party after. I wore hearing protection, but I recall my ears being fatigued anyway. I also got quite drunk and woke up with a hangover. The following day I noticed that my hearing was a little duller, and that my T was a little louder but I didn't pay much attention being used to minor ups and downs. That night I stayed up late and noticed that the ringing began to grow louder. I only slept 3 hours and the next day my hearing in the top end seemed even duller again, and the T was horrendous in comparison. in addition to my two high pitch tones, I now had a boomy sub tone, a whiring refrigerator, crickets and frogs, and perhaps 4 more pure tones ranging from 800hz to 16khz. My my. My hearing seemed dull for two more days after that, and a new wave of H intensity set in.

The high end detail has since returned, and during the second half of this week during the days I had been able to be calm with the new T in silence. and totally zone out the T in ambient noises like riding my bike through traffic. But these new frequencies have been creeping up when it gets quiet at night and scaring the shit out of me. They are miles worse and more intrusive than any of the T I have suffered thus far.

So here's the question. Do you think that I may have damaged my hearing in this set back? Would Prednisone help me at all? The give away is the dullness in hearing for those days and the new array of tones, but I don't know enough. The soonest I could get myself some would be this coming Monday if I can convince a doctor to prescribe it to me. It's also worth mentioning that I think I have a subtle headcold that's crept up on me, but the symptoms are allusive other than headaches and fatigue.

Thankyou for your replies in advance,
your brother who suffers mildly.

Hi @Daniel Pinkerton. I am not a doctor, and have no training or authority to make any statements on what medicine you should take. But I would highly advise against taking any prescription medication without the direction of a trained medical professional who is qualified to prescribe said medication.

Hi @Daniel Pinkerton
Since you have been reading some of the posts in this forum, you may have read my posts which I will put in a link below. Headphones and tinnitus do not go well together and I advise you not to use them even at low volume. More is explained in my articles below. Try to read them in full and not skim through them. Hopefully your hearing is okay and no harm as been done. It's probably a good idea to get a referral to ENT for tests.

When using your speakers for monitoring try to keep the volume low.
All the best
Michael

Hi @Michael Leigh,

I have read some of you posts and went through a lot of your Tinnitus thread a few days ago. A lot of great information there. Thankyou for sharing your insights. You're a beacon of light to people new to this like me.

@Kolisar

I agree. I wouldn't take it if a doctor wouldn't prescribe it. I physically couldn't. But I've found that having seen 5 doctors and an ENT so far about my T and H - most know quite little about the condition and each has differing information or ideas regarding. Any opinions on the matter medical or otherwise are appreciated.

Thank you for your kind comments @Daniel Pinkerton
Hope that you start to feel better soon

yes go to an ENT and take Steroids asap
for noise trauma this is standard procedure in most countries - based on many studies
but the window of opportunity is quite narrow after trauma for the best results
