      Cause of Tinnitus:
Music and recently a simple cold made things really worse
      Hi folks,

I'm new here, so hi to everyone :)

I have Tinnitus (9500Hz pitches in both ears) since 2000 due to ear damage (from guitar playing + chronic sinusitis since I'm 8 which seems to come from 'gluten' intolerance and since I'm on diet things are better on the sinusitis side, actually besides tinnitus I'm feeling very well and I've been doing sport etc to keep my health at a good level)

But recently after I had a simple winter cold and I've had new sounds that have seriously complicated my situation and I can't sleep very well anymore. I started to hear new sounds (like electric low freqs and one higher 1200Hz tone) a few weeks ago, which made me woke up at night, and I really have the impression things are becoming worse every day, they become louder.

I've learnt from the initial tinnitus to not listen to it and live with it (that's what the doctors say here, there's no solution other then relax therapy and mask tools, just don't listen to it) but this new wave of sounds in my head are really making me nuts, I can't seem to be able to handle it anymore. Sometimes when in bed one of the new sounds go away but then when I wake up and start moving the pitch comes back.

On top of that my ear specialist (ORL here in France) last week was particularly unfriendly and said that I was a deaf musician (ok I lost some higher freqs above 6-7Khz but actually hear very well and don't need hearing help), so I was really upset with the last visit I did and wasn't far to walk away from the appointment. The guy was supposed to be one of the few Tinnitus specialists in France, but I was shocked on how he talked to me and burned into the ground all the new treatments this forum seem talk about here (AM101, ...) so after having paid 100€ for listening to shit and a very disappointing rendez-vous I'm wondering if I'll ever be happy again, especially at night I'd like to sleep better, I must say I'm really worried about my situation, but doctors don't seem to care much.

What would you suggest ? Are some of the new researches and treatments really working ? The doctor said the AM101 was a real scam and that the guy behind it was ridiculous (he had seen him at a meeting) with no real scientific proves. I'm doing some ostéopatie appointments and also have planned a hypnose session next month but I must admit that I'm not sure if this will really help.

Any help or input would be welcome, thanks in advance !

AM101 or the guy behind it are not a scam. Your doctor sounds more of a scam!

Hey, thanks for your reply, yes I agree with you I have the impression that actually 80% of the doctors we consult don't really care about our health, there's here just to take the money, ... let's just hope that AM101 or other new treatments will make it and really work for people with T.

I posted on another thread about my father in law having T since he was young in his navy days. He's now 65 but his T hasn't changed much---yes, new sounds have come and gone but he got used to it. The TV and radio have been a big help in relaxing and forcing oneself to focus on other more pleasant sounds. Good luck to us all.

Sorry for the delay, yes I have had my ears checked and while I lost in the upper freq range since two years nothing changed so the new T's are from either the cold I had or from stress. It scared me really a lot, made me really sad the last few weeks, and I think I'm going to try meditation or other solution as for now it doesn't seem there are good medical solutions for it yet. I still hope something like AM101 will make it for very agressive T. The more I read about it, the more I come to the conclusion it's also a lot stress, anxiety & emotional related, definitely weak points for me. So maybe meditation is after all a solution for not just T ?

Thanks for the input, I just hope it won't become worse, I could handle the high pitch T since 15 years, it's just the new sounds that are making me worry, the problem is that I can't do much about it, I use protection when I play guitar but the new ones seems to be here since I had a cold so go figure.

You're stronger than you think. I know we all have bad days---I've been having a bunch of them. For some reason I'm having trouble sleeping lately. Anxiety? Maybe it's a part of it since lately my T seems louder. I had to raise the volume on my ipod up twice instead of up once to help me drown out the noise. I keep telling myself it'll be alright and try to relax. Well wishes to you.

Thanks for the kind words, I hoped to be able to face the new tones but last night things became so hard that I now believe I can't win this battle, I don't seem to sleep enough anymore, this must be the worst thing in life, I had to face a number of things so far, but this one is a little too much for me ...

Please try heat on your ears as this would help you by comforting you. I use a vibrating infrared heating wand, they are about 30 dollars. Infrared heats much deeper and has been known to cure some cases of tinnitus. As you know tinnitus origins can vary. If you do not have a heat source just an old ,must be cotton, sock filled with dry beans and tied off at the top and heated to very warm in the microwave will work. For me on the ears and back if the neck heat really helps tone down the tinnitus and releases endorphins to comfort me too. Again hope works for you too.

I do have a suggestion for you. Call around to various hearing doctors or hearing aid places and see if you can get an extended hearing test. Normal audiograms go up to 8khz and that is it. Since you have tinnitus at 9.5khz you should see if you have hearing loss at that frequency and at the 1200 hz frequency you are talking about. If so, I would suggest trying an extended bandwidth hearing aid (that goes to 12 khz) such as the Siemens Binax 7bx or the new Signia (Siemens) Primax 7px. There may be others as well. These aids can be programmed up to 12khz but you need to have audiogram that goes that high but the audiologist needs to be able to know what to program. Make sure the audiologists knows how to program a hearing aid beyond 8 khz. The hearing correction by my aids reduce the perceived loudness of my tinnitus. My audiologist said I can sleep in my hearing aids and that is what I have been doing for a while now. Ask the audiologist if you can do this and also you can put a big fountain in your bedroom to generate some ambient sound. If the aids don't help you can usually take them back and get your money back within a certain time frame. You can call around to find out. I wish you the best and hope you feel better soon.

Thank you Sandy for the help, will definitely try this. I have T's from different origins, I'm sure about it, high freq's from playing guitar, but the new ones are from a cold and also extreme stress situations from last 3 months and a burnout on top. Problem is that I can't allow to take a break for a few weeks to get some well deserved rest, for money reasons, but hope to find some more time for myself in the next weeks and sleep more. But I'l try out your suggestion, never tried that tip before. thank!

Thank you Jason, I believe the hearing specialist did a test last week up to 16Khz. My hearing is perfect from 20hz to 7Khz and then goes down progressively to -50db on the higher freqs). I was suggested to use hearing aids, but as I read that some people experience an increase of T after using them I'm unsure if this is a good idea ? The doctor said that they aren't needed in my situation. But I definitely am going to try a fontain or something to be able to have some background waves or other types of nature sounds, especially at night when things become harder for me.
I'm also going to see a new session with someone who does some of kind of craniosacral therapy, not exactly the same but very close. and next week I have a hypnose session as I had positive reports from the T SOS center in France, we'll see what comes out of all of this. I've also heard good things about meditation and also nerve regeneration treatment through isochronic tones, does anyone else here have good experience with these ? thank you

Check out some apps (whie noise app) on your phone too---that's what I use at night. Plenty of different sounds on there---from rain to busy street noises. I use different noises from time to time just to mix things up. My favorites are rain, waterfall, white noise, and streams. I turn up the volume only 2x so it's loud enough to drown out my T and it's about a good foot away from me. Good luck to you and others. There are days when sleep is a rare commodity but once your cold is gone hopefully things will settle. Take care.
