Media Are Whining About Funding for Drug Addicts!

This weekend I went to see Beautiful Boy, a movie about 18-year-old Nic's struggle with crystal meth and other such fun things. The movie finished with a line which shook me:

"Drug overdoses are now the leading cause of death for Americans under 50. While addiction treatment is M-A-S-S-I-V-E-L-Y under-funded and under-regulated, there are those working tirelessly in all communities to combat this epidemic."

Addiction treatment, we are told, is massively under-funded. As a tinnitus sufferer, I'm disheartened to see this mindset repeated across various media outlets. "We’re finding that services are not able to reach out and engage those who are most at risk but who aren’t voluntarily coming into treatment. There’s an awful lot of unmet need, and the system at the moment isn’t able to reach out and deal with those people", says independent.co.uk, bitterly complaining about "lack of money" and "reductions in investment".

"They’re vulnerable people with complex needs and demand for our support is increasing. Yet we’ve seen our funding slashed by 42% since 2010. The situation is the same across the country", says The Guardian and wonder why treatment centres are being slashed. And there are plenty of those sharing this concern. They believe junkies have been massively sidetracked and that they should be prioritized in respect to funding. Should we now listen to their appeals? We haven't considered a few facts from a tinnitus sufferer's side of things first. JUNKIES are those who HAVE intervention. They have options. All we "have" is a fucking tinnitus masker and a bunch of charlatan behavior therapies which do nothing to reduce the loudness of the tinnitus. Essentially, there are NO therapies for us!

Addiction treatment is not under-funded. Drug addicts are the most expensive people for society to keep! In my country, they prey on welfare. They are not ashamed to use up tax money. And for them therapies are all free. As for us, we have to pay for all of our PATHETIC therapies. We cost society from relatively little to practically nothing at all, since most of us work and are expected to function normally in spite of our condition. The sympathy that goes to us is on the same level as to junkies!

Most stories do not end like Nic's in Beautiful Boy. Report indicates state addiction treatment is massively ineffective as, according to Boston 25 News, "more than half of the adults entering state-licensed, residential addiction treatment centers in Massachusetts do not complete their treatment programs and one in eight are readmitted within a month of being discharged, according to a new state report." Administration officials of Boston say they have invested significantly in substance abuse prevention and treatment, including an $18 million spending increase in 2016!!

Keeping in mind researcher Professor Rauschecker who recently said that if we'd get the funding needed, he is certain we'd cure tinnitus in five years (instead of his ten), it's a disgrace that such a substantial share of money goes into simply extending the lives of ungrateful junkies, most of who no amount of treatment can rehabilitate into functional individuals! It's time to take ALL that money away from the addicts, and put it into tinnitus research where it belongs. Otherwise, we're looking at 10+ years, possibly a lifetime, of incessant ringing in our ears. Not one junkie shall get any more funding, before we sleep quietly!

FIRST silence, THEN shitty human waste!

The real irony is that far too many of us are on a fast track to become the ‘human waste’ you speak of thanks to this inescapable ‘prison of noise’ condition.

Perhaps this was done to throw us off the scent. It is very difficult for a person to change their writing style because it's like a fingerprint. Perhaps one can do it for a short while but will eventually return to type. The writing style of these two members are too similar for me to believe they are two seperate individuals!

Its the flow of the words and the emotional content behind them. Very similar in both posts.... It is also strange Fightthearmy has just recently joined TT and the first post quite vitriolic and no mention of his history with tinnitus...

Bam's writing reminds me of Chuck Palahniuk's (the author of Fight Club) writing. The writing of this new poster doesn't really remind me of Palahniuk.
Is it the case that you disagree with OP and believe that addiction treatment is underfunded (even when we take into account all of the other sufferers that funding might help)?

Not at all. I agree with what Fightthearmy has to say. After I read the post and reading Bam's reply and know his writing style, both seem very similar to me. I have seen this done in other forums where one male member had six different IDs, some of the names used were female.

You’re a paranoid idiot Michael. People who know me know that I would never judge or call addicts or anyone scum. I'm also incredibly honest and have several addict friends and family who have died of drug addiction. Hope that clears up your weird little tangent.

I don't understand this 10-year number that is being thrown around a lot. Neuromod and Frequency Therapeutics both are in the critical stages of achieving at least some success THIS YEAR. Neuromod is getting peer reviewed and are soon to release their product to the market and Frequency Therapeutics are starting a promising phase 2 trial AND have been outspoken about applying for fast-tracking if everything goes according to plan.

If any of these companies are even half-successful this year, the snowball effect will be set into motion as both of these methods surely can be improved upon further once they show result, and investors will be ready to throw money at them.

In my estimation, some sort of reduction in tinnitus is 1+ year away for many of us. Substantial reduction - 5 years tops.

I see junkies overdose everyday, smoke meth/fentanyl in front of families, in the elevators, on trains. It's messed up. I joined the public sector to help people, it's what I like to do and I'd really like for these people to get better. There are many services here to help them recover.

I call EMS 2 times a day for some dude who's practically dead on a platform. Fire+EMS+police = 8 or so people getting paid ~40 bucks/hr to revive some guy who will be back on the streets within 8 hrs doing it all again. Sounds heartless... I know, but unless they want to get better themselves or we ship 'em into the woods... there's only so much you can do. Clearly turning blue in public does not change their outlook on their situation / end of rant.

Well now we all know @Michael Leigh has 2 usernames. Most of his threads are copy pasted and repeated a million times. He also uses violent threatening language to wash people’s mouths out with soap. I wouldn’t like to pass Michael Leigh in the street. I’ll have my mouth washed out with soap or head bombarded with phases from Jastreboff.

I agree that tinnitus funding is pretty much nonexistent, when people try to get things going it’s so hard because people would rather talk but not actually walk the walk, I’m guilty of this myself.

As far as taking funding away from people with addiction, well that’s ridiculous. It is underfunded, it mostly falls under “mental health” which is shockingly underfunded.

People are so quick to judge, and so small minded at times. Walk a mile in their shoes and see how your feelings will change, some stories I’ve heard are truly devastating, addiction isn’t just drugs and alcohol it has different branches. It isn’t just a quick fix, it’s complex depending on that persons needs, reasons/experience as to why they came to be the way they are.

Yes people need to help themselves first but sometimes the “scaring” runs way too deep and unfortunately they can’t heal that “scar”. Yes some people just don’t want to help themselves so we should scold the ones who are desperately trying to get out of this black hole they are in? Really?

Life isn’t black and white there is always that grey area, we are all suffering with this noise in our heads and it’s obvious the OP is in pain but taking it away from other people who are in their own Hell well that is just...

I do not see the comments that my adversaries throw at me @Bam as most are on my ignore list where they belong. You are not. I apologize for saying you and Fightthearmy are one of the same person, for I was obviously wrong. I would have apologized sooner if your rebuttal was more cordial. Even when one disagrees and perhaps a little upset, we should exercise calm and diplomacy. We Brightonians, of which I'm a fully fledged member now, must show others how to do it.

LMAO what the fuck are you talking about.

Send the ones who pushed opioids (big pharma and doctors) on people who didn't need it to jail and use these fucks' money instead to finance both causes.

Really ironic knowing countless people got tinnitus from meds. Yes taking benzos for years and years is as much of an addiction as the one of your local cokehead.

The homeless situation here in Los Angeles is the same as your thread about helping drug addicts via funding from the government or private individuals.

Human compassion should never be underestimated and sure many of the homeless and addicts on the streets chose to live this way for various reasons.

As with any private or government funding if one life is changed or helped that is what matters most.

In my opinion our tinnitus community needs to be focused on our needs for research and support and medical attention. Matteo de Nora donated over 20 million dollars to start the TRI organization. Why don't we see more benefits for tinnitus research with that kind of donated money?

I would love to see a Tinnitus Hub podcast with Matteo de Nora.

@Bam I and I am sure most of us here would never doubt that you would create multiple accounts here!! And knowing the extent of your suffering with your memorable thread - accusing someone who needs and gives such good support is something that really pisses me off.

Glad you found a way to deal with that and not let if affect you personally.

      HI @Paulmanlike

Your post had me laughing and for that I am going to go easy on you. Regarding my threads and posts being copied and pasted many times. Let me assure you this is something that I don't normally do, except on a couple of occasions when I thought it necessary to copy and paste my Thread on TRT which I will explain below. My posts may seem similar in wording but each one is individually typed. I mostly respond to posts where a member's tinnitus was caused by "exposure to loud noise," this is probably the reason my posts are similar.

The last thread I started in this forum was titled: Tinnitus and Negative Counselling, posted on Feb 4th 2018. When I started a thread on TRT, I thought it necessary to copy information from other threads that I written on this treatment as I thought it would help with clarification. I have written over 50 articles/threads and each one was individually typed and took a lot of time compiling, as many drafts were written before posting in this forum. I feel I have covered what I needed to with "Noise induced" tinnitus and for this reason haven't started anymore threads on this, as I feel I'd just be going over the same thing.

In the near future I hope to be posting a topic on "noise exposure" as this is what I am familiar with. The idea is something I haven't covered before and so it's fresh and new and somewhat of a challenge which I like. You have nothing to fear from me if we were to meet on a dark night.

I abhor the use expletives and other forms of bad language, and will keep away from those that use them at every opportunity.

      Michael

We can tell people, explain it, write essays, post videos, attempt to raise awareness all we like, with as much dedication and energy as we have left after this ‘Bastard Effing thing’ has laid us low.
