      Hello everyone,

My name is Tine. I am 22-years old student from Slovenia (Europe). I apologize for my English (it is not my first language).

Here goes my Tinnitus story (I hope it ends happly soon):
last sunday night I took two Guarana kapsules (coffee substitute). After about half hour later I started to hear some wierd hissing sound in my left ear. I did't bother me much at that time so I carry on with studiing for exam next morning. But the next afternoon (Monday) I heard it again and this time it was more nagging. Next day everything get even worse because next to hissing sound some whistling sound appeard. On Wednesday I went to see my personal physician. She was not there so I went to a different one. She decided to first test me if I am anemic. The blood test showed that everything is fine. Than she examinated me and checked my ears with otoscope. She said that she can not see any reason for my tinnitus and she suggested to wait until next week to see if things gets better by itself. Wednesday and thursday nights were like hell for me. I was not able to sleep well and I got very anxious. So I went back to see my real personal physician with high hopes that I will get something to help me. She examinated my ears again and she noticed that left ear is quite inflamed so she give some antibiotic drops and prescribe me Betaserc (to help my tinnitus). She also said to come back next week if there is no improvments.

Now I ask you guys for help. What can I do to prevent this tinnitus to become chronic. I am very very affraid that I will never again be able to live in complete silence. Because I can not sleep or concentrate on anything and I am very tired I am on the edge of nervous breakdown. I am really begging you for some helpful tips. Do you perhaps know how often acute tinnitus become chronic? ( I would like to know how high my chances are)

I know I sound a little like a drama queen because there are people in the world who suffer for much worse conditions, but this tinnitus really strike me down. I am very peaceful person and whole my life I liked to do things in peace and silence and now it feels like that tinnitus took away everything that I like about life.

Thank you for all your help in advance!

Hi, I am so sorry you have this problem . On the good side , if there is a treatable cause ( like ear infection ) , I think it is a lot more likely your tinnitus will go away , maybe u should try some sleep aids in the short term - as I'm sure poor sleep is adding to your stress levels . Hang in there!

Get on a course of high dose prednisone for 7 or so days.

      Thanks for your support!

Bad news is that after second use of antibiotic drops (Maxitrol) my tinnitus went crazy. Now I also hear buzzing in my right ear. I am going to stop using these drops until Monday when I go back to my personal physician to ask what to do next. I will ask her if she could send me to ENT specialist and I will ask them about high dose prednisone therapy.

Last night was really bad for me. I was really going mad (I almost went to Emergency to beg for help). On my luck we had some Helex pills at home (also known as Xanax) so I took one of those (0,25mg) to help me go trough the night.

      Thanks again!

      Hi again,
so as I have said I went to ENT specialist on 24th of December. He checked my ears and said that they look OK to him and said that tinnitus should go away in few days. He said that I shuld continue with taking Betasec twice a day.

Its almost three weeks since my tinnitus started and I haven't seen any improvment. I have feeling that it is even geting worse. I become very anxious and depressed since I haven't sleep well for a whole week (it seems that even Xanax has lost its magic).

I am planing to go back to doctors this week, but I am afraid that they will not be able to help me.

I am already taking almost all food supplements I could find on internet that could help (vitamins, magnessium, ginkgo biloba, coenzyme Q10, omega-3-fatty acids, garlic capsules, fresh pineapple) + drugs (Betasec and Xanax).

Please tell me what helps you to sleep well and how many hours a day do you get to sleep since onset of your tinnitus?

      Thanks!

      Hi, Tine,

I'm so sorry you're having a bad time right now. There are others on this forum who have experienced tinnitus after taking an antibiotic drug. There must be a lot of ototoxic antiobiotic drugs out there, and I hope you will be able to get off this drug, and ask your doctor for another one (if still needed) that is not ototoxic.

I had an experience like yours, in that my tinnitus (I had mild tinnitus before) got very bad after taking a blood pressure drug. That was 3 1/2 years ago; I got off the drug, and am now taking only natural supplements for my blood pressure. I still have tinnitus, but I want you to know that it has settled back down again quite a bit, so that it is not very bothersome, and I can sleep again!!

Here are some suggestions for sleep, using natural supplements:
      Melatonin
      Melatonin/Valerian combination
      Chamomile tea
      SleepyTime tea
      Magnesium
Chinese herbs (I take An Shen Bu Xin Wan). It is calming and is also supposed to help with ringing ears.

Others on this site may have additional suggestions for you.

It took me a long time to be able to sleep again. Now, I sleep from 5 - 8 hours again, most nights. For a long time, I could only get a couple of hours each night.

I wish you well, and hope that some of our suggestions are helpful to you.

      Best wishes and hugs,
      Karen

I am much better now. Thanks for asking JohnDoe. How are you?

I was prescribed Ambien (I take half of 5mg pill every night) and my sleep has improved and so has my mood. Since I can not take Ambien for longer period of time my doctor recomended use of some antidepressant with strong hipnotic side effect if I will still have trubles with sleeping after month or two. I will also order SleepPhones from Amazon and try to sleep with some calm music (better option in the long run than drugs) + some melatonin.

I also went to do audiogram which showed that I have no hearing loss and that my tinnitus is mild and low in frequency. ENT said that I have good chances that it will go away one day (he said that it is impossible to predict when).

However, I still don't exactly know what caused my tinnitus and they have told me that it is almost impossible to find that out. I have some dental problems (and large cyst in left maxillar sinus) and it could be somehow connected to my tinnitus, but I am not sure.

Best wishes to all of you!

Zdravo Tine, pozdrav iz Ljubljane! :)

I also got my tinnitus at 22 or thereabouts, so I can understand your worries. However it's good to see you are doing better.
