When I went to a tinnitus/hyperacusis specialist, they gave me a test called an OAE where they played tones into my ears to test their responses to sound.

The tones increased in pitch and got louder and louder until I couldn't take it anymore and had to say "Stop!".

I was shocked when the doctor told me that the tones were not getting louder at all, only the pitch was rising. But to me, each tone was much louder than the last!

Is this some form of loudness hyperacusis, rather than pain hyperacusis?

If you didn’t experience any pain, it wouldn’t be pain hyperacusis. Sounds like you have a bit of sensitivity to high frequencies if they feel more intrusive without an increase in volume

No, humans perceive certain frequencies (1-4 kHz) as louder than others for equal dB.
