People with tinnitus hear a ringing even when there is no sound. The prevailing theory blames a malfunctioning auditory system. However, it seems that abnormalities in the brain's limbic regions, which determine the emotional impact of sensations are important and how they are experienced, may also be involved.

Josef Rauschecker, PhD, DSc, and his colleagues at Georgetown University used functional magnetic resonance imaging to scan the brains of 22 volunteers, half of whom had tinnitus, while they listened to various sounds. Patients with tinnitus showed heightened activity in the nucleus accumbens — a key limbic region — when presented with sounds that matched the frequency of the 'ringing' in their ears. They also had anatomical differences in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, another limbic area.

The research suggests that an abnormal limbic system elevates the perceived importance of the tinnitus sound or fails to suppress it, and that interactions between the auditory and limbic systems may be at the root of this disorder, but we need your help to take this research to the next phase!

This is not a cross-sectional study or a randomized controlled study. It's a cohort study.
Endowment or private funds can be limited for cohort studies where there's not a financial return.

This is a chance for those who discuss awareness and research to take part if you are able.

I think it would be beneficial to have him interviewed for the site if possible. I know this isn't something easy to set up, but there are a lot of people here who would back him. This way people can directly see who they are donating to.

Does his research seems to be in line with the stimulation devices? He even talks about DBS (similar to MuteButton or Susan Shore) in his presentation, but in regards to depression.

Was he suggesting that DBS can be used to produce more serotonin or dopamine thus reducing tinnitus? Or use it to correct improper brain function?

I will try in an effort to post about this study on financial boards where money managers post.

I did awareness years ago by doing this and had response from several asset money managers. Sometimes it is needed to go where the money is.

 

It would be easier for me to donate here if this weren't a Jesuit college. They have tons of cash and probably gold as well.

Georgetown University had an endowment of $1.6B in 2017. They don't need our measly $50K. Why is Josef Rauschecker even asking for donations? Can you or someone explain? @JohnAdams?
