Hello hello TT! Long time no talk!

Almost four years into having T (and three increases) and I've noticed something new about my T.

I usually never ate salmon in the past because I just never figured out how to make it according to my tastes. Well I've been getting into eating healthy and exercising lately (yay me) and decided to incorporate salmon into my diet at least once a week as it counts as a lean protein. Eating a lot of chicken gets boring after awhile.

But come to find out, salmon makes my T spike!! o_O

Oh well, I'm still gonna eat it because it tastes so good the way I make it now! (salmon seasoning, garlic, and olive oil and into the oven it goes. or the microwave if I'm lazy)

Yes I've tested this theory five times and sure enough, every time I eat salmon no matter what kind of T day I'm having, it always spikes. I wonder what's in the salmon that does this? Any thoughts?

Spike or not, its healthy. ;)
Maybe something to do with blood values....? I have no idea (n)

Wow, that's bizarre! Have you tried making it without the salmon seasoning? There may be some ingredient in the spice blend that set it off.

That is very strange! Does it happen immediately or the next day?

Versus other fish, salmon has more vitamin D and is higher in omega-3. Normally those are considered good for you, some members even take extra vitamin D. Maybe you already have high values. Have you ever had your levels tested?

Editing to add: and I just read that omega-3 might help with age-related hearing loss: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/20534742/

This is a crazy thought, but maybe the spike from salmon is not a horrible sign. Maybe it’s your hearing trying to repair? Is that even possible? I’m probably just tossing out crazy ideas now.

For me, healthy eating also involves not overeating. The best way to avoid overeating is to not try to make food be tasty. I stopped adding any kind of seasoning and salt to my food. I also try to eat the same set of dishes that I dislike. This allowed me to lose 40 lbs, and to keep this weight off for over three years (my body mass index used to be 22 [right in the middle of the suggested healthiest range], and 90% of men my age and height were heavier than me). I ended up gaining 15 lbs as a result of T, but I am now trying to reverse that.

Out of curiosity, are you eating wild-caught Alaskan salmon? Farmed fish is nasty and full of bad stuff, and Atlantic salmon tends to have a lot more mercury.

Alaskan salmon is probably bad for the world, since it's being overfished, and it's still got some mercury in it... but it's the only salmon I'll personally eat. Mercury is associated with tinnitus in some very woo-woo texts, but I haven't seen a serious study on this. Notably, salmon also tends to be high in selenium which is a chelator of mercury, so it's difficult to say how much mercury you're actually getting exposed to.

Yeah for me that's not a problem cause I actually have a problem with under eating since my T started (thanks depression) and then eating junk food when I do eat. So far my new diet is working well but I still need to eat more.

Hi derpytia (how is that pronounced?)

Have you tried making the salmon without the salmon seasoning? That may contain certain herbs/spices know to cause tinnitus spikes. Like Indian food or Thai food. Just read that Deb asked the same question.....

I love salmon. And it is best to have fresh caught and not farmed fish. Good that you can have it fresh there!
I usually use garlic powder. I rub olive oil on the fish and then the garlic powder. But usually we barbeque which comes out so good!! We have gotten very good at not over cooking it.

The salmon never spiked my tinnitus. But many other foods will. Once in a while it is worth it....

oops...I should read the posts before replying. You already answered the question.. Sorry.

@derpytia have you eaten any salmon lately? I'm still fascinated by how it seems salmon triggers your tinnitus.

No... I've recently been hit with yet another incurable chronic problem. Visual Snow. I'm feeling exactly how I felt when I first got T years ago now. Can barely eat anything :(

What has caused it? How much does it interfere with your ability to see?

I can still see and I have perfect vision with only a little astigmatism in my seeing eye (I only see out of one eye. My right eye has been blind for years and my brain no longer uses the visual pathway to it). But it makes reading on a computer screen or a book hard sometimes. I'm attempting to get used to it but it's only been two weeks. No idea what caused it. I just woke up with it one morning.

Do you know what caused your right eye blindness?

I was born with PHPV and a cataract on my right eye. They had to remove my lens when I was 10 days old and then the numerous surgeries done on the eye later to correct positioning and such caused glaucoma which sapped the little vision I had in the eye. We were hoping to one day get a lens transplant for me but because of the glaucoma that will never happen.

Oh wow - you've basically had to deal with it all your life. Is there a chance that an implant (cyborg style) can work or is the wiring also messed up? (some blind people regained - basic - vision with the new technology)

With glaucoma, the whole eye is permanently messed up. No amount of technology will help. My opthamologist wanted to replace the eye with a false one and has offered several times but i always refuse cause the idea makes me shudder lol
