Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) Clinic or Specialist in Houston TX?

Anyone know of a specialist, or a TRT clinic in Houston Texas?

 

I'm from Houston, I went to Allison audiology and they said I needed a second opinion from an ENT before going in for TRT...they referred me over to Dr. Chang.

 

Sorry for the late reply. Have you visited Dr. Chang, and had a follow up with Allison audiology?

Also, have you heard of this place "UTD's Callier Center"? it seems to be a place people seem to recommend

 

In my opinion it is far too early for you to be starting TRT. Leave it for at least 6 months. You are in the very early stages of tinnitus and you will probably habituate within 6 months. Don't waste money on this expensive treatment at this time it's not necessary.

Michael, I have a question for you since you have done TRT and seem to be very experienced. Does TRT help with TTS symptoms? IM having issues with hyperacusis and TTS. My own voice makes my ear click/spasm, and also touching parts of my face. I figured if i could get rid of the sensitivity it would help with the TTS. Any advice?

 

My understanding of TTS in an involuntary spasms in the middle ear. To be onset with you I don't know whether TRT will help this. I have read the TRT book writtnen by Professor Pawel Jastreboff and don't remember TRT being used to treat TTS. TRT is not a cure for tinnitus but in many cases (centainly in mine) it helped . It involves regualar couselling with a Hearing Therapist and wearing white noise generators.

You are welcome @JoyBenz007 There are posts in my "started threads" on TRT. What is involves and when I believe it should be started. I have had the treatment twice with good results but it's too early for you at this time to be considering it in my opinion.

Hey Joy, I got my tinnitus a little over 8 months ago from a rock concert. I've been to the ENT probably 10 times since then, due to ear pain and constant fluid issues. They test my hearing every time and its always normal, of course they only test up to 8ooo htz. What's weird is I never had any fluid issues till after my noise incident.

I also have what I believe to be a mild hyperacusis due to things just sounding abnormally loud. The hyperacusis is harder to deal with than the tinnitus since all social events and activities seem to have some volume to them.

I'm at the point to where if i can get over the noise sensitivity, I think I will be good. That's why I think TRT might help me.

 

If you decide not to pursue TRT at this time, maybe look into finding a therapist for CBT. It's often covered by insurance, which is an added benefit.

There is a psychologist on TT who talks about his own experience with tinnitus and CBT. His name is Dr. Hubbard and I have found his threads to be very helpful.

With the exception of white noise machines, I am really not sure what the difference is between TRT and CBT. In either situation, the therapist matters so seek out one that you're comfortable with.

I've had audiologists give me advice regarding sound enrichment and white noise machines. With technology today, there are a lot of options. They've also talked to me about my CBT and said that combined with their sound enrichment advice, it's exactly in line with what TRT sets out to achieve.

That's what I'm having a hard time as well, social activities that I feel are ok to do...especially in Houston. I'm 25 so pubs, bars, concerts...were all fun to me previously before T. I hope you get together with an audiologist that can help with your T and H! I had hearing sensitivity for about a week and it was honestly heartbreaking and worse than the T

 

I know it really sucks at the moment, and you feel like life as you know it is over. But you really have to take a few steps back for now and try and let your body heal itself for quite a while. There is still a good chance that that will happen on its own if your body, and hearing does not have to deal with any new trauma.

I would be really careful with all the "fun stuff", as well as listening to music with any sort of headphones (just don't do it). Also be careful of medications as some are ototoxic and can cause tinnitus. If you perceive your ringing to be a lot louder because of this, trust yourself. As well as stuff like the dentist (like ultrasonic cleaners)

 

May I ask, Did you see Dr. Chang? How did it go? I’m looking for a second opinion in Houston as well! I hope maybe yours has resolved by now.
