Over the last few months I've been getting periods where my tinnitus pitch changes to unbelievably high and it actually makes me cringe. It hurts my head and my ears. Like a shock to my brain. It can be fleeting lasting only a few seconds or lasting longer like minutes on and off for hours. Like little jolts I guess..

It's been getting progressively worse over the last few weeks where a whole day will be filled with these jolts on and off and it's miserable. I'm feeling so down today because yesterday was all day long and my head just hurts.. I long for sleep all day.. I feel so alone yet I still have to work my 40 hours a week and come home and take care of my 3 kids. I'm exhausted and emotionally drained in general with my life and this tinnitus is just making everything so much worse.

Can anyone relate? This is the best way I can describe it.. its awful.. and it seems to have moved to my left ear primarily where it was my right before.. I feel lost.

Who do I go to? ENT? They don't care. My neurologists don't know. I'm not sure what an audiologist can do.. I feel desperate, alone and scared.

A few times a day, a different, considerably louder tone emerges in my ear. It is probably 3 times louder than my constant tones. It used to scare the hell out of me everytime it happened. You will get used to the changing tones eventually. The more you stress about them, the worse and louder they will be.

The doctors have no idea how to help you. Don't waste thousands of dollars on them like I did. You're the only one who can help yourself.

This isn't the same as what you're describing because I also get that. I call what you're describing fleeting T. This is like a jolt to my brain. And it hurts. The fleeting t is super scary but doesn't cause me pain. This new symptom is different. It also hurts when I talk as my own voice causes sensitivity even. I don't know how else to describe it but ultra high pitched change in overall tinnitus tone that can be brief or last..

I've experienced something similar, but it sort of seems to come and go -- a few years ago it happened all the time and caused me significant distress; lately it's been both less frequent and substantially less severe when it happens, knock on wood.

I could rattle off all the dumb stuff I do or take now which I wasn't a few years ago, but I don't actually think any of it matters, I think it's just brain rewireing over time... so I'd say try to think/act in ways that don't make you feel worse than you already do, and try to have some faith that it'll pass.

Three kids, my oh my! I'm a month in to #1, don't know how I'd do all this with 2 more demanding time. You're a saint!

Thanks! I am hopeful it will pass. It's less bothersome when I am busy, of course or preoccupied. I didn't have this initially it's a new symptom that's started over the past few months and getting more frequent. Or it will come for a few days and then go away for a week and then return.

On another note, congratulations on your baby ! They're amazing of course and show you a new love you didn't know existed! THey are also very time consuming. I have little to no time alone lol.. this too shall pass!

A neurologist would be your best option. I sympathise with you regarding working full time and having children to look after. It sure is emotionally draining and exhausting having to put up with the tinnitus, insomnia, etc and keep going with work and life. The impact of severe tinnitus and sleep depravation on a person's life is not understood by others

      Hi Natalie,

Needless to say, you are a strong woman, yet have a stressful life. This could play a role in your symptoms, but to be safe, I would go the clinical route and make an appointment with a specialist who will write you out a script for blood work as well as digital imaging. Hopefully, the results will be negative and your new noise will go away ASAP. Good luck!

Totally sympathize with you. You described my new tinnitus sound to a T (pun intended). Mine sounds like a high pitched dentist drill in my head but instead of coming and going it's constant. When I'm busy doing something I don't really notice it. But later in the evening when everything's all quiet it's all I hear and it's driving me nuts. Am hoping to get in to see a doctor some time this week. I don't know how long I can bear this for. I wish you all the best when you visit your neurologist. Keep us all updated.

Natalie I just wanted to reach out to you after reading this, I have the same thing it started a week ago and it's driving me insane. I've had tinnitus since April 2014 and was feeling like I'd started to turn a corner with it after developing a new noise some months back and going right back to square one in my habituation. Well now as well as that piercing noise I have another hissing noise which has developed in my bad ear too. I feel like shit to put it bluntly.
I'm also a mother to 3 little ones,2 girls and a boy and this is just robbing me of the enjoyment of my kids. I've gone back to wishing it away and feeling desperate about the situation. Sorry this isn't really any helpful advice for you just wanted to say I know what you're going through.

My tinnitus is manageable. It's still there but doesn't bother me much most days... seems to have stabilized :)

Is it still high-pitched? When did it stabilize?

The days blurred together, so I don't know exactly when but sometime over the last few months it just became more manageable. Probably because I am finally habituating to it and don't fixate on it as much as before. I hear it still but it doesn't usually react an emotional response anymore. I've also been diagnosed with a more serious condition and been focusing on that which draws attention away from tinnitus... cutting caffeine completely helped a great deal!

The last couple of days I’ve noticed that my tinnitus have become more high pitched. I still hear multiple sounds, mostly located to my left ear and to the middle of my head, but they are more high pitched now since onset (2,5 months ago). It almost sound like shooting laser, (haha like Star Wars :p). Also I hear a morse code that seems to come and go, also in my left ear.

Do someone know why it behaves like this? Is this a sign of healing?
