I just left the cinema half way through Dunkirk. A regular cinema and not IMAX but it was so loud I felt the bass through my whole body.

I got uncomfortable right from the opening but it was a bit slower and I tried to give it a shot. It just got worse and louder until I got really bad panic and left. I had foam earplugs in and it still was dangerously loud.

Beware of this movie, it is too loud! Watch it at home instead when the blu ray drops.

I just hope my tinnitus isnt getting worse from the loudness and heavy bass. Felling really shitty for not leaving straight away..

I'll wait for the blu ray. War films in cinemas are crazy loud.

@Fangen, Sorry to learn about your very unpleasant experience. One movie critic did also complain about how awfully loud it was. That said, thanks for taking the time to warn us!

Thank you for focusing on that, because that was of course the main issue here.

Thank you, my ears seem to feel normal at least and haven't noticed any new sounds or loudness. I was in a bad anxiety mood last night and I was swearing to my boyfriend the loudness got worse but he said that it probably was just due to the anxiety. Today it feels OK but I am still kinda shaken up by that and in the "blaming game" (why didn't i just leave right away, why did I even go and see it etc).
I hadn't read the reviews as we went because we wanted to do something on our night out, in hindsight I should have checked but it is rarely that movies get THAT loud. Seems like the Christopher Nolan wanted a movie so realistic that the viewers would leave the movie with hear damage and tinnitus, just like the soldiers :/

Just be glad you got out when you did. And these days I would never ever go to a cinema. They play all the movies so incredibly loud!

I live in Europe so I know the cinemas here are more regulated than for example in the US, from what I have heard the loudness can vary a lot between places. We are more strict with how loud concerts, cinemas, clubs are allowed to be and since cinemas here are more or less an monopoly I am sure they are pretty heavily regulated in terms of noise. But still, not sure if the mixer was just so off with the bass that it felt so much worse than it might have been but it was much louder than the last few movies that I have seen (Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Star Wars etc) and those I could watch with plugs in and almost feel it was too muffled by the plugs in dialogue scenes.

Still, stay away from this movie! Somebody ought to teach Nolan about how hearing damage and tinnitus works.

      :)

Actually, my decision to comment had more to do with the overall theme of your post (and that of many others on a public forum - for that matter). Going to the cinema and complaining about the noise level is - to me - a bit like going to a concert wondering why it was so loud or... heading off to a nightclub while "unexpectedly" finding it hard to converse without having to shout...

That in-a-nutshell was my point. Having said that, and considering you spelt "Dunkirk" incorrectly twice, you might want to refresh your modern history lessons...

I don't know. The author has been to other movies without complaint, her post was to alert us that this movie in particular is louder than other movies. I think that's worth noting.

The movies these days are way way louder than movies back in the 80s/90s. If i go to a movie, for damn sure i'll have my ear plugs in. Id say the majority of the movie scenes are not super loud, but when the action happens, its very LOUD and uncomfortable....

Please do protect your ears, because nasty spikes can happen after seeing movies...

@Fangen I'm quite new to tinnitus and posts like yours are both encouraging and informative to those of us who want to continue to engage in fun activities and not become housebound. Thanks for sharing, I'm looking forward to this movie, but I'll now make a point of taking my custom plugs.

Comments such as the above serve only to deter me from sharing on my experiences on this forum.

      Thanks again for your advice,

I am just gonne assume you are here because you had a shit day and wanted to share your bad mood and just be an ass to everybody here :)
Like @Tinker Bell mentioned, I have been to the cinemas WITH EARPLUGS (I have not attended one movie since my T without them) and several times and it have never caused a problem or a spike. I live in Europe so they regulated the noise level a lot so there are not insane level of loudness, however I always take precaution anyway even if I know the db shouldn't be harmful to a normal person with healthy ears. This movie in particular was much louder than any other action movie I have been on, and there are lots of posts on e.g reddit that are talking about that this movie has been cranked up because Nolan wanted to make it "realistic".

So what if I misspelled? Does that make you feel better because you have an overall shitty personality and have nothing else going for you beside sitting and acting grammar police? :) With your crappy logic none of us should leave the house because life is loud no matter, but I don't go to clubs or concerts. I use plugs in any kind of venue that might be loud. Get a life, I think it would benefit you.

@Ross McLauchlan Thank you! I just wanted to make sure that people here could decide on their own if they wanted to see the movie anyway with plugs, because it was incredible loud despite plugs that are up to 34db in reduction. I always use ear plugs that have high db reduction but it was mainly the bass and prolonged (5-10 min) high tones that seem to be the issue. I only experienced the bass, and it was horrible. I left before the real action started so I never got expose to the loud and long tones.
Don't hold back on sharing your experiences, 99,99% of the people here are great but there will always be someone that are just bitter and feel they should try to bring people down despite being on the support forum. Love to hear whatever you have on your mind, good or bad :)

No, he's generally an asshole all the time. I haven't logged in a while and wasn't surprised to see he's still a raging asshole.
In case any one is wondering why I haven't logged in a while is cause my T has gotten better with time, believe it or not and I didn't pay out my ass for useless treatments like this edge of science clown either.....and then he posts a useless success story cause what else is he to do, look like a fool for paying out his ass for useless treatments?
Treatments that he didn't invent like he wants everyone to believe, edge of science my ass lol.

Sorry for the rant, it's douchebags like him that make people not want to return here to post or share.

I wasn't sure if he was the troll that I used to see around here or not so I didn't want to call anybody out before making sure. But then my hunch was probably right, and seeing that I got no reply means probably that he didn't find it fun anymore to be an ass.

No worry about the rant, I am glad that your T is getting better! :) I come here now and then but usually not stopping by very often, beside to warn people about the movie as it was louder than any movie I have ever been seeing. I don't go see movies very often due to the sound exposure but maybe twice a year, too bad this one gave me a scare so slightly weary to go to the cinema again. Oh well, life is life :) Hope you will keep doing well with your T! :D

I don't agree. Not all cinema is unwatchable for people with T if they use a good set of ear plugs. I, for one, am very glad @Fangen posted as I was invited to see Dunkirk, but now know not to. Thank you!

I wasn't actually sure what a "raging asshole" is. So, I had to look it up. Contrary to what I had anticipated, Urban Dictionary was rather limited on the number of opinions. In fact, just one was offered - and eight years old too:

      upload_2017-7-31_20-27-27.png

Coming up empty handed since I don't have the symptoms described by the blurb above (particularly those of the rectum), I decided to see what Google Images had to offer on the subject - this was the very first image to appear through the search function:

      car1283.jpg

Also, Jennifer Aniston was featured (no doubt because of her role in Horrible Bosses):

      200_s.gif

In addition, Star Wars seemed to be implicated in the matter:

      59293632.jpg

Who would have thought Yoda could possess such objectionable traits? Well, the world is full of surprises, I guess. However, certain images offered more of clue - here is a photo of someone elected by roughly half a nation of +300 million people (that's the guy on the left, and with a slight orange tint - in case anyone is in doubt):

      DAH85lYUIAAIqMG.jpg

To the extent that people share the same traits as those they elect, I guess I cannot be the only "raging asshole" out there. But... somehow no clear pattern seemed to emerge from the mosaic of pictures. Certainly, any meaning eluded me - just like tinnitus does for a lot of people (particularly on this forum). I guess then a "raging asshole" is a bit like the definition of pornography in the Supreme Court case of Jacobellis v. Ohio (from 1964): Pornography is hard to define, "but I know it when I see it".

      @attheedgeofscience

Thats the second time in one thread that you've tried impose your brand of "wit" on a tinnitus forum. Sadly, it just comes across a bit desperate despite the time you clearly put in to these comments.

Why when someone is reaching out on a safe space, obviously in distress, do you seem to show some sort of contempt? There was no empathy or compassion in your any of your comments and certainly no wisdom. All they contain are chastisement and thinly veiled attempts to appear intelligent; either by correcting someone's spelling or by referencing obscure court cases.

      Well done on mastering Google.

I've never understood why certain people equate grammar with intelligence, let alone feel the need to correct other people; it's just aggrivating and a bit petulant. Maybe you want refresh your compassion and humility instead of quoting yourself on your profile page:

      "The truth isnt always convenient."

Wow. You're so deep and self-referential.

I think we might benefit more from your insight and support regarding tinnitus as opposed to your quips.

      Cheers,

      Ross

Makes me very happy that my post irked you enough to respond. News flash, you're not witty nor are you smart. It's very convenient that you honed in on what a raging asshole is (you) rather than comment on some of my other observations...

Arrogant, narcissistic, conceited people rarely if EVER apologize. When they do apologize it's usually only for their own agenda, that is, being cornered and having no choice but to concede and apologize if they want to progress or get what they want. We can feel sorry for them as they don't think there's anything wrong with them. Their lives are deep down thoroughly unfulfilling even if they think the opposite. They get a superficial feeling of acceptance from some of their peers who appear to respect them for their exaggerated accomplishments. They love to think they are better than others and you'll find them mocking others either in public or behind their backs, or both. They lack deep emotional connections and the ability to express that side.

Fuck this film!! It was freaking loud (sorry for the rant).
But amen to this thread, I forgot to post about this movie...
I went on Saturday to see it, and I had my earplugs with me and I just had to leave,
30 minutes was just enough for my poor ears!! so freaking loud, plus the movie was soo bad
It's loud noise fest, I rarely go to the movies and when I go.. well I usually see comedies, dramas or adventures.
but this movie was insane, I had to leave my friend watch the whole thing alone.

on the good side, I went to shop clothes while he was watching that snooze fest.
DON'T GO SEE THIS MOVIE. it sucks and it's freaking loud.
I think I still have a spike from this, I don't know anymore...

      You disappoint.

59 937 338 people voted for Donald Trump. If, for you, that number represents "roughly half a nation of +300 million people", then I'm not sure you have this brainpower you say you have.
