Hi, it's been a month since I posted on this forum . I was wondering if someone could offer me some help please as I've posted in a lot of forums and gotten no reply.

I'm 20 years old and I am female, I've had tinnitus for just over a year and last month it got louder .

This louder tinnitus is a loud hissing sound in my left and right ear and sometimes it feels like it coming from my head when it's at It's loudest. This noise comes and goes . It can get quieter and then louder.

I'm wondering has anyone else got this type of tinnitus and if they can tell me what to do to help it please. Would acupuncture help me? I'm very desperate

I am a lot older than you with identical sound and symptoms including variation in volume sometimes hour to hour. I am a scientist so I tend to study things in detail. There are many theories and don’t believe you will get a solid answer honestly as the cause of tinnitus is largely unknown. For some reason you and I and countless others have neurons that have gone amuck in our brain that our brain perceive as stimulus coming to the auditory cortex that we convert to a sound. Sometimes these neurons are relatively calm…or not too enraged and other times without explanation they are amped up which increases the intensity of the hiss we hear. Nobody I have found has been able to identify why. My personal believe is…it is not unlike neurological disease like say MS that varies in people…some days a given person is quite stricken with their MS and other days, they feel pretty good.

You are young. IMO tinnitus will be solved ‘on some level’ in the next ten years. Only my opinion. In twenty years, by the time you are 40, the strides achieved in the medical industry will be vast. Tinnitus may even be solved genetically in the future.

I know words like ‘hang in there’ are somewhat empty when you have this weird noise in your head. If you can somewhat accept this noise and not focus on it…you are on your way to habituation where tinnitus is more just there than a huge annoyance.

I will give you a simple analogy. A young couple buys their first starter home and unbeknownst to them, it is located near a train track. They buy the house, move in only to hear the train and freak out about it. They believe their world is forever spoiled because the train and its horn drives them crazy at first. Over time, they notice the train less and less for some reason. Then, quite unexpectedly, they actually develop an affinity for the train and its sound. I put that last part in to make you laugh. Most of us don’t have an affinity for our tinnitus but for many that have had it for a long time, they aren’t bothered by it…it is simply part of who they are. Btw, I once bought that house by the train track.

Maybe you could share how any form of tinnitus can be cured.

      Hard of hearing? ;)
The so called type of tinnitus the OP has is pretty irrelevant. No cure to any form of tinnitus.
To spell it out for you...it doesn't depend on what caused her tinnitus. The root cause of tinnitus among many can remain largely a mystery.
Please elaborate if you know otherwise.

Perhaps she simply needs to be told there is no cure and her best path forward which is the same for all of us is...a level of acceptance of the natural variation in her tinnitus. The acceptance of this reality which isn't always easy to accept is a stepping stone to habituation.
Those that struggle the most with tinnitus don't accept it and fight it which fosters anxiety which seems to magnify symptoms of T...its perceived severity.

I am aware that there is no cure! I asked if there is something that could help lower the noise like acupuncture. It's so frustrating that I had mild tinnitus that never bothered me and then decided to vamp up one day. 20 years? They said 10 years max a couple of years back? How can anyone "habituated" go something they hear over everything!! I've been trying to stay positive but listening to the sound for 2 minutes tears me down . I live Ireland and I don't know one person my age that has tinnitus it's so depressing. I also don't know what caused my tinnitus and I had a hearing test the other day and my hearing is perfect

My T is the hissing type, and I've found that rain sounds masks the T quite well. I have a Brookstone sound generator and an app on my iPhone called "White Noise".

Its about not concsciously thinking about it, im not there yet fully but i can go for periods of time where i don't consciously think about it but its still humming away.

Yes, it sucks you have tinnitus at such a young age. Know what sucks more? The countless neurological diseases that people your age have....those that go blind at your age....lose an arm or a leg or develop cancer or MS. Those that develop freakish physical anomalies due to no fault of their own. So this is probably the worse thing that has happened to you. You don't have much life experience because of your age...therefore you don't have a broad comprehension of all the suffering in the world and why this seems so life altering to you. I will say again, until you change your perception of the 'threat' of this disorder, you will struggle because it affects your emotional level. If you can't get to a better place mentally, then I strongly suggest you see a therapist and consider taking a med to chill you out. Or, volunteer at your local hospital...maybe in a burn ward....and really learn of the scope of human suffering which will put your tinnitus in perspective.

PS. acupuncture won't help and neither will visiting a chiropractor so many waste their money on. Only thing that helps is acceptance. Yes not an easy path, but necessary to not have tinnitus rule your life. And...as mentioned, I have the same hiss you do and right now mine is raging a bit. Was pretty quiet yesterday and will likely be quiet later or tomorrow. Difference between you and me is I am less bothered by the same noise you are because I somewhat accept the roll of the dice understanding there are about a million things that can wrong with the human body and the vast majority of me works pretty good. :)

Tinnitus caused by otosclerosis can be cured about 50% of the time with a stapedotomy. If you've got cochlear otosclerosis, it's most likely not going to go away with the surgery. Ask me how I know.

There are other root causes that can be fixed (leading to a fixing of T too).

I agree with Stophiss. It sucks that you to deal with this, it sucks that we ALL have to deal with this, but we do have to stop and be thankful for what we do have. It could always be worse :)

I don't recommend this long term but sometimes klonopin will take the hissing noise away for me. Other times a medication called Lamictal can work for me. Lamictal has to be tapered up slowly and I have no idea if that would work for you. I wonder if there is some kind of natural thing you could try. Maybe Passion Flower with Valerian root but if you used them, I don't think they should be used long term though. Someone on here said if they use an antihistamine but its not good in my opinion to take those long term either. Some people use bioflavanoids that some (not all) say can help with tinnitus. There are probably other things but I am just not knowledgeable enough. Great question though.
