I first had brief moments of tinnitus as a young child. It began in earnest in my early 30s. I believe it is related to premature hearing loss; my father also had tinnitus and hearing loss. I'm fortunate in that I've always been able to deal with it, even though it is sometimes quite loud. What bothers me most about tinnitus is not being able to hear the sounds of nature as I walk in the woods: I always wonder what I am missing.
