Ototoxicity/Excitotoxicity

Been doing some research lately and I'm somewhat convinced that my tinnitus is caused by erroneous signal firing of neurons, I also read that NMDA receptor antagonists generally work with cochlear tinnitus where the tinnitus is caused by erroneous signal fire as opposed to hair cell death.

Is there anyone more knowledgeable than me on this?

Been going through a very tough time coping with tinnitus (started a little over a month ago) and obsessive research hasn't helped.

Although, everything I've read on the subject seems like this could be what's happening with me.

My tinnitus started after a week of too much Ibuprofen in late May, by the way.

Could really use some advice on supplements/doctors/in general right now from some ototoxic tinnitus veterans...

@tiniturtle in what amounts per day?

 

600 mg to 1200 mg worked for me. From what I've read, NAC is a precursor to Glutathione, which helps reduce oxidative stress. At the same time, it also acts on the NMDA receptors. It reduced the discomfort and volume of my tinnitus following drug ototoxicity.

 

@tiniturtle thank you, is there a window of time when it is most effective /falls off? Also, what do you mean by a precursor to glutathione? Appreciate the help

 

Probably as soon as possible. But it's worth trying at any point. Glutathione is your body's moat powerful antioxidant. It's synthesized from NAC. mitigates the oxidative stress which is the method by which ototoxic drugs and noise damages the ear.

 

How soon after did you start taking NAC?

I just ordered a bottle, hopefully it helps some

I think you're going to be fine. Ibuprofen usually doesn't cause permanent harm.

I started noticing improvement after 3. I'm about 4 months in now. It hardly bothers me now. In time it may go away entirely. And I took a drug that is widely known for its damage to hearing.

Guys, I ordered from the US acetylcysteine company doctor's best detox regulators 60 capsules. Today he pissed me. In together with the capsules there were two odor absorbers. But still, the smell from the capsules is very unpleasant, chemical. Who faced this? To accept it? I'm afraid...

I know this is an old thread, but I am interested in it. I think I just got some kind of ototoxic recation from taking zantac belive it or not. is their a chance that this NAC could help me ? It's only been a couple of days. Can you please let me know. I don't know anything about this but it does sound good. I'm in the US is it available here.

Thank You for getting back to me, yes I understand the only way to find out is for me to just try. Is it fair to say that you had an ototoxic reaction to ototoxtc painkillers ? May I ask how long ago that was ? and if your still taking them or any other meds that are considered ototoxic ? What steps did you take after it happened ? I'm assuming that you only knew that the painkillers were a problem because your tinnitus spike ? being that you could not stop the painkillers cold turkey and had to tapper off of them, did your tinnitus spike go back down after you competly stop the painkillers, or are you still taking other meds that may be considered ototoxic. I'm sorry for all the questions, but like I said before, it's had to find people that have gone through an ototoxic reacation from meds, even in here on the TT site. So I really do appreciate any information about your case that you can share with me. I would be interested in your story, when you took the painkillers what happeded ? what you went through and where you are today.

Just for reference, it is also a precursor to Glutamate, if B6 deficiency is present.

 

That means good or bad?

 

It means if you have a B6 deficiency, you will convert NAC to Glutamate, which is something you want to avoid.

 

Is there any specific method I should take in consideration introducing this supplement?

 

Just make sure you are either taking a methylated B6 or eating foods high in B6.
