Hey, Sorry for starting a new thread about my spike but I just want to have as many responses as possible. Today I plan on getting either prednisone or Nac for my recent spike after noise trauma. But I don't know which one I should ask for. Is one more effective than the other in this situation (spike was around 48 hours ago) or can both be taken together? etc.

I am extremely anxious and angry with myself for the situation I put myself in so I'm willing to try pretty much anything for the ring to go back down to where it was before, which was slightly mild. I know this isn't helping me but thats just how I am. For some background info I only recently developed T about 2.5 weeks ago.

      Thanks in advance!

Prednisone. As far as I know NAC is a supplement that is available without a prescription.

Thanks, Do you know if it is safe to take both together?

Hi Bertman, not sure if you still around the forum. I am 4 weeks in and had a similar incident where I was exposed to loud noise 4 weeks after initial exposure. Did you take NAC with Prednisone or just one. Also how are you now?
      Many thanks
      Anton

Try melatonin and vitamins a, c and e, too. These are all antioxidants shown to help protect the ears. Also, make sure you are getting enough magnesium. This is a common deficiency.

I've taken methylprednisolone together with NAC many times with no problems but definitely ask your doctor when you get the prescription to be sure.

I live just over the El Dorado Hills line. So every year some come to my area on the 4th of July to play with fireworks.

I take vitamins that help blood flow and circulation for my ears. I can also get benefit with prednisone, because my damage was done by a syringe that was used to clean my ears. Because of that, I have nerves in my ears that are tender. So when I take some prednisone the tinnitus lesson a bit. It always comes back completely within a couple of days.

I've been taking NAC for the past 3 months or so. Is it the case that you are supposed to take it only for a short time after exposure to noise?

Prednisone is often touted on here as a miracle cure, but it's actually hard to say how a person will react to it. Some seem to benefit, but others can react quite badly as it's quite a harsh drug, and paradoxically (like many drugs) it's ototoxic.

Antioxidants are probably your best bet such as NAC, vitamins A, C and E etc. There is some evidence of a preventative effect, but a lot of the studies contradict each other. However, antioxidants are good for your cells in either case.

It's supposed to be effective taken before exposure. This is often disputed however, so it's hard to say what real life benefits it really gives, but it never hurts to try. Helping rid your body of free radicals is also never a bad thing.

Thank you. Sounds good - perhaps taking NAC had minimized the impact of me hearing those doors slamming shut, the fire alarm, etc. ...

The theory is that a high dose of antioxidants in the blood stream can help prevent the early death of your hair cells when they are traumatised.

      Hi @Bertman,

I agree with all of the comments here from my own experience, and I take NAC daily. I was on Prednisone but I am unsure of its efficacy for my situation.

I do believe the anxiety and angry emotions, which both result in cortisol release, will not serve your immediate experience of T, nor the foundation on which your body needs to be able to heal itself - so try to go easy on yourself; an error of judgement is all that happened, and as fallible human beings, its a natural process of growing.

If you only developed this T less than 3 weeks ago, this is very early onset, so your response is not unusual.

To your opening questions, you can safely take Prednisone and NAC togther -certainly according to my ENT and Ear specialists point of view.

Mindfulness Meditation, even if its only a few minutes a day, will help bring your stress levels down. Acceptance meditation with both the T and your error of judgement will also help create a less amped psychology, which is what your body requires to heal effectively.

As odd as it sounds, try to find something to laugh at - something that causes you to truly smile, forget your malady if only for a moment, and experience a huge dopamine response. Genuine laughter not only creates a more relaxed stateof being, but it has been proven to balance and improve the immune system, relieve pain, and its a long list. The crucial piece about laughter is that it recruits major parts of the whole brain, and is fundamentally a limbic system response - the same system thats behind the anxiety, worry and anger.

      Good luck, and stay balanced.
