Steroids: Prednisone / Dexamethasone / Others (Oral and Injections)

Do you know if there is a risk in taking a second oral dosage for the second time since a month?

 

I think you are getting too obsessive about your tinnitus. Normal sound of the day won't worsen you tinnitus, so as long as you use ear plugs in loud settings and stop listening to music via headphones it is very very unlikely to worsen. And if it did worsen you'll feel it right away, you won't wonder if you had a spike you'll clearly hear that it's louder, you'll also certainly have ear pain, ear fullness and muffled hearing. In that case take Prednisone ASAP, otherwise no. And spikes that are cause by normal everyday sound is normal. For example when there is a plane passing above my house my T gets louder for like 30 seconds, I'm not going to take Prednisone for that.

 

But to answer yor question there is absolutely no risk for your ears in havinga second course of Prednisone

 

Thanks. It's just gotten blurry, I have no idea when sound is "dangerous". But the fact that I had my -in ear monitoring- peak twice to around 110 dB can't be too good for these fella's.. I do feel a little bit of pain near that side of my face, but might be of the stress and coming from neck. And I -think- I hear my T a bit louder. Which might also be because of the stress. Anyway, just gonna take it so I can't regret it..

 

Can't you have a limiter for your IEM ?

 

Well I am looking into that now. I am a camera operator and it's hooked up to a different camera all the time. But I've heard there are things that you plug between the camera & headset/ In ears that limit the sound. Never seen it though.

These things should be mandatory, but frankly, our ears are less important than their profits I guess.

 

Make then buy this thing ASAP

Has anyone upped their dose of Prednisone while building it down? I've yet experienced another loud noise.. This time the loudest ever, wish I saved my dose Prednisone for this actually.

Can I up my dose again? I was taking some since sunday and taking less and less each day. Today I was on a 4'th of my starting dose.

Anyone who could guess? I am happy with a guess..

I have previously advised you that's it's not a good idea to stay on Prednisone because of raised sugar levels. It is better to talk with your GP and take AD if you're stressed or try St John's Wort. Tinnitus will fluctuate but you will find it more difficult to habituate if you reach for the meds everytime is spikes. I know it isn't easy but you have to try and tough it out. We have all been through it. Prednisone isn't the answer believe me. Use sound enrichment and if things get too rough at night, there's nothing wrong in having a small shot of Brandy, wine or a glass of larger for medicinal purposes. Evenings only.
Things will get easier in time.

Yeah, I am actually doing "fairly okay" with the T itself.
It's just all the new loud exposures I can't seem to avoid that really make me sad..
So scared that it will get worse or has gone worse..

 

Tinnitus will fluctuate a lot in the early weeks and months of onset but this usually settles down. As long as you keep away from loud noise and keep your headset at low volume and try to take breaks, I don't think you'll have too much problems.
Talk to you doctor about any anxiety you might be feeling

The "staying away from loud noise" seems to be a problem though.. every other day I run into a situation (like now with the "Confetti Cannon's") I keep getting angry at myself why I didn't avoid that or was more prepared for it.. Never expected it to be so loud when I saw these things..

 

If you happen to be around loud sounds then use noise reducing earplugs but try not to use them too often. If surrounding sounds become too loud for your ears, you might have some hyperacusis. It should heal in time.

Yeah, that's my rule as well. I use them if I forsee a prolonged exposure to sound. I barely expected these things.. I even moved back from the popping of a champagne bottle.. Other people (closer to the confetti things) also said it felt loud.. Maybe I have to be even -more- careful.

 

I took two courses of methylprednisolone last month and had a week of noise he'll while in a trip last week and ringing is much worse though tests show no hearing loss.

ENT is reluctant to prescribe a third round of methylprednisolone. Any experiences from people who've been on it more than two times in a relatively short time?

Hi, everyone. I was wondering if anyone has any luck with Medrol almost 2 months after onset of tinnitus. I had severe inflammation due to a fungal ear infection impacting my ear drum (hate Q-tips!). It's been healed since a couple of weeks; overall ear looks fine.

ENT has prescribed a 4mg Medrol Dosepak for 6 days for any residual inflammation that may be causing the tinnitus and occasional ear pain on hearing loud noises.

Does anyone have any experiences to share?

 

Never had fungal infection, but doesn't that sound like something that would need drops?

I've used Medrol before and that made my t worse both times, but have seen plenty of stories (vast majority) say it either helps or doesn't do anything.

 

The fungal infection is long gone. It was treated with hydrocortisone +2% acetic acid drops, and it's all clear.

 

Does Methylprednisolone count here or is Prednisone the early onset relief? I just got put on MethylP after a bad ear infection which cause some insane tinnitus and i'm wondering if I should do a round of P before it's too late.

the golden time in 48 to 72 hrs from onset.
It's very beneficial and can reverse some of your hearing if you were LUCKY enough.

 

Shoot. I have been on methylprednisolone for 3 days now, I got T roughly 5-6 days ago. I just asked my ENT to prescribe me Prednisone instead and I will switch to that today. Is it too late to hit the golden window?

 

@OGZada It's usually supposed to be taken within the first 48 hours, but I remember some wrote their doctor said it was standard practice give it within the first three months, so it might still work. It's better to be safe than sorry.

I've developed tinnitus two weeks ago. its a constant hum like a tv is on in my left ear. I had a hearing test and I have significant high frequency loss in my left ear and some in my right ear. my ENT wouldn't prescribe me Prednisone because he said I didn't have sudden onset hearing loss and because of that it wouldn't be worth the side effects. I was a little confused considering the fact i have a high level of high frequency hearing loss after this test but because it wasn't sudden (completely muffled, cant hear out of the ear - what the doc said) that it wasn't worth it.

I called my GP to see if he can prescribe but I would like to have your guys' thoughts. Thanks so much!

 

He may be going by the definition of Sudden SensoriNeural Hearing loss, where you need to have 30 dB loss, over 3 consecutive frequencies, in 72h.

My T started 5 weeks ago, the audiologist found moderate SSNHL although I can still hear out of both ears, but not great. After going to several general practitioners and a neurologist, I finally was able to see an ENT. He has over 25 years experience and told me there's "no harm" in trying prednisone. So he put me on a trial of 50mg over 3 days. I'm 3 days post treatment, haven't noticed much of an improvement unfortunately. I keep hoping.

It seems that different ENT's go by different definitions and differ in terms of their willingness to prescribe. I am sure they have all their reasons for not prescribing, but from what I've read and experienced, unless you have medical contra indications, trying a course of prednisone shouldn't be harmful.

They are both end up as the same thing. Prednisolone is easier on the liver and more readily absorbed according to doctor Google whereas our livers need to convert Prednisone to Prednisolone.

 

Just wondering about dosage of Prednisone following an acoustic trauma. Anybody been on a 60mg taper or other dosage? Do you remember how the taper was scheduled? i.e. 4 days at 60mg, 1 day 50mg, 1 day 40mg etc ...
Any info at this point would be helpful.

I've had Tinnitus from acoustic trauma for a couple of years now and I have managed to avoid or protect myself against very loud sounds. Yesterday however I was in a parking lot and a child's balloon popped about 12 feet away from me. Because we were surrounded by concrete walls the sound was amplified even more. I've read that a balloon pop can exceed a gunshot of 140 db.

I was thinking about going to the doc to get Prednisone as my ear feels a bit full. I wasn't sure if it will do any good as I already have tinnitus. Any insight on whether it will do any good?

I have seen that prednisone can eliminate/reduce tinnitus if you use it when you first start developing the ringing sound. does anybody have any experience/thoughts on this?
