I Just Want My Tinnitus to Go Away! It Started All of a Sudden After Drinking Wine

@Redd09 : I am so sorry. I know how awful this is, or at least how awful it was for me. First thing's first: get checked by a doctor. There are medical conditions which can cause this weird, sudden onset. If you have one, you might find that treatment alleviates the noise. There's no need to...

    Tinnitus' Weird Ways

In my view, tinnitus loudness is principally a function of attention. If there's no new, sudden hearing loss, you have probably just started paying more attention to the sound.

    New and Looking for Info/Support

I'm sorry for your condition; it is no fun at all. I would emphasise that the prognosis is good; even if the sound never goes away completely, it will very likely get more manageable and quieter, and you will learn not to hear it all the time. And you might be lucky; a lot of people I've spoken...

Looking for Thoughts — Should I Push for an MRI? Is There Anything Else I'm Missing?

There are really only two things you'll find in an MRI, which might change the way you're treated. The first is an 'acoustic neuroma'; essentially a benign growth which presses into your auditory nerve. If you have this, they will monitor it, but they likely won't take it out unless you're...

Hi I'm New Here and Hoping for Help

Take drugs to sleep; don't endure the insomnia. Low dose amitryptaline worked wonders for me. Lots of people also get day-time relief from hearing aids, which boost high frequency background noise. These are expensive, but you can usually return them after 30-60 days if they're not helping.

A Neuroscientist Realises How Little We Know

@Nick M With the benefit of hindsight, I feel a little less annoyed about this than I did at the beginning. Tinnitus hasn't been the focus of a huge research effort simply because most people who have the condition don't struggle to lead normal lives. I'm not sure the same is true of...

A Neuroscientist Realises How Little We Know

@Bam I take 25mg in the evening; I was put straight onto it by my doctor, so don't know if 10mg would have done the job. I had been prescribed zopiclone (7.5mg) for a couple of weeks before it, and that also worked fine for me, though it only knocked me out for about 6 hours. I tend to think...

A Neuroscientist Realises How Little We Know

So I thought I'd post an update. Nearly 4 months in, and things are a lot better. I can still hear a hissing whenever I listen for it, but I now go for hours at a time, most days, without listening for it. I don't 'try not to think about it', so much as just trying not to dwell on it. And it...

Anyone Have Experience With Amitriptyline for Sleep?

Old thread I know, but I thought I'd add that I've been on 25mg for about a week and have had both spikes and quiet days so far. Going to give it a few weeks and see. I found 10mg had basically no effect on me.

Two Weeks on Amitriptyline. Tinnitus Increased!

Any updates on this? I'm taking 25mg for sleep, and it worked great for two days, then hardly at all last night and I have a spike now. Probably going to stick with it at least for 2 weeks, but not sure.

6 Weeks In, Still No Relief

Just saw this old thread as I'm now in a similar position: T for 6 weeks and seriously down. To be fair, it has backed off a lot in the last few weeks, and I'm now only suffering occasional anxiety rather than the constant stuff I had before. But I can't sleep at all without pills, which is a...

Sleep Aids for New Tinnitus Sufferer

@Jill Ridge 28 days, eh? I'm on day 9, I think, so will have to go back to my GP. The problem is it's not like this T will be gone in another couple of weeks. At a month now myself, and hope it will go at all is fading, but habituation takes months as I understand it, at least. The problem...

    Sleep Quality Problem

I do feel better on sleeping pills. It's only the 'Z' drugs that seem to do the job for me though: I have discovered that my weird super-power is a near total tolerance of benzos. As far as I know I've never tried these even once before, but neither a small nor a large dose (on consecutive...
