Tinnitus started while I was a student, in both ears, and continued for 3-4 years: then after a day of feeling dizzy all day, it disappeared for a few years.
Returned in 1974, and then I started to have the acute vertigo attacks and was diagnosed with Meniere's Disease: only then were my symptoms linked to acute vertigo attacks I had had at age 7, which had left me pretty deaf in my left ear. So this was now bilateral disease. I had saccus endolymphaticus decompression surgery on my right ear in 1977: it only worked for a while, and was re-done in 1979 and again in 1981. After this, most of my symptoms remitted, apart from slight high-pitched tinnitus which didn't so much interfere with hearing.
Unfortunately, just in the last few months I have had a recurrence of the really bad tinnitus in lower tones: this really gets in the way of hearing normally: speech and music are all distorted which is an enormous blow to someone who spends most of her free time playing music and singing. I now have 2 hearing aids (CROS system) which help a bit but don't remove the tinnitus or distortion. I have been referred back to ENT, but have no indication yet f when my appointment will be.
