@twa I believe (but I may be wrong), if one loses hearing slowly throughout life, the brain has time to adapt to the small increments of hearing loss, whereas if one gets an acoustic trauma which blows out a bigger part of hearing within a small time frame, the difference may be too big and the gap is filled with tinnitus. If that makes sense.
