When you say “age-related,” how old are you? I am 76 and have had tinnitus for 35 years. I had spinal surgery on January 20, 2025. Two weeks after the surgery, my tinnitus spiked. It has been almost five months, and I am trying to habituate. Does anyone think my age might be a factor?

If I had known about tinnitus and how unreliable the NRR of earplugs is, the answer would have been no! Now that I have tinnitus, the answer is still no!

It amazes me that they manufacture headphones that allow the volume to go beyond the safety limit. It seems we are our own worst enemy.

You relied on the NRR, but you will never get a reduction of 33 dB. At best, you might get about half of that.

You may think you are well prepared. However, you should research real-life Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) values. They are often much lower than the NRR listed on the package.

Don’t be so hard on yourself. You have habituated before, and you can do it again. Keep praying for better treatments or a cure.

Research how to calculate real-life NRR. You may not achieve an NRR of 22 to 23.

I hope you are doing okay. Spikes are terrible. After 35 years, I have had my share. Sometimes they just happen. I pray for better treatments or a cure.

@Cloudious, don’t live with a false sense of security. Avoid loud events. Wear earmuffs when involved in noisy activities, such as mowing the lawn or using power tools.

Some countries don't recognize tinnitus as a disability. You should try physiological disability.

I only miss silence! I may watch movies at home and control the volume! Why a theater has to crank up the volume for special effects is beyond me.

What was their lifestyle for the last 20 years? If they were exposed to loud noise, it will get worse.

I never knew so many things affect the inner ear. Ototoxic drugs, viruses, SSHL, ... It is scary. Pray for better treatments or a cure.

Xanax, Prozac and Ambien have been a godsend for me. I have been taking the cocktail for 27 years, under a doctor's supervision. I do get spikes but I'm still here praying for better treatments or a cure.

Are you under a doctor's care? Do you have a supportive family? Please know it will lessen with time. It could take 12-18 months. You are not alone, we are many!
