I've been thinking about making this thread for a while, and since she's going through a setback right now, I decided to make it a reality. If you frequent the Suicidal thread (where she shows endless compassion), the 2020 Presidential Election thread (where she shows endless awareness and wit), or the Frequency Therapeutics thread (where she shows endless knowledge), then you're familiar with @FGG. @FGG, I can't tell you how many times her posts have been a comfort to me in dark times. She's lost more than me with these horrid conditions. But she still perseveres, still shows kindness, and still keeps trying. If @FGG has helped you like she's helped me, then post here. Let her know she's loved and appreciated!
Truer words have never been spoken. Thank you @aot for starting this. @FGG not only selflessly helps others and shares her vast scientific insights in the threads, but she also does a lot behind the scenes here. She helps with Tinnitus Talk Podcast (you've heard her in our Frequency Thereapeutics episode, and you'll be hearing her in our upcoming episodes as well), is part of our Patient Expert Panel and other initiatives. What also humbles me is that she supports our work financially, even though she's had to give up her career for the time being. And she is and does all of this while living the hardest period of her life. She's just a good person, through and through. Tinnitus Talk turned 10 years old on March 5th, and it's people like FGG that have made this community one of a kind.
@FGG is definitely one of the superstars of this forum! She is generous in many ways; with her knowledge and kindness. She is extremely knowledgeable on hearing and related research and spends a lot of her time here educating others, always in a positive way. But she also takes the time to get to know people and support where she can. AND she has helped us out behind the scenes, most notably in creating the Tinnitus Talk Podcast episode on Frequency Therapeutics. This was very helpful to me personally — it’s nice to be able to share the workload of content creation with others who are willing to help out. She did an amazing job explaining the science involved in easy-to-understand terms. I believe that online communities can be every bit as important to human connection and wellbeing as in-person communities. Let’s all take @FGG’s example and make Tinnitus Talk an even more awesome place!
Omg stop. This is seriously embarrassing (but thank you...). Edit: no one comment on this so it gets buried, lol .
Oh yeah, she’s such a queen. So smart on so many things. I always appreciated that even before she got noxacusis she read thru the papers and studied anyway on our behalf. Her contributions to the political topic have also been one of a kind.
If I do manage to survive, Tinnitus Talk will be one of the biggest reasons why. As far as individuals, FGG is right at the top of the list and is a true inspiration. I can't begin to explain how many times I've been confused about something and had my confusion clarified, most often by FGG. I don't think the average person (obviously) really understands the situation that people with severe hyperacusis are in. We can't talk, leave our homes, tolerate any noise whatsoever. Beyond our loved ones (which are also heroes), these online groups are what we have. She does a great job of not making it feel like it's "all we have." Fuck the people who stereotype forum people as crazy nut jobs. I am alive because I am a part of a community that values science, intellectualism, compassion, and helping others. We're not perfect, but this is not some rinky-dink operation. If I do write a success story some day, I have a few people to thank, in particular. Great idea starting this thread, @aot. It never hurts to be thankful along the way.
Awesome job, @FGG. I have to admit that I very rarely venture onto the threads listed by aot, but the contributions I have seen by you have been excellent. You're a kind soul. May the best of your past be the worst of your future.
I do not visit much the election thread, but I do (silently, I have really not much to say) visit often the other two, and I have seen her outstanding and compassionate* contributions. Thank you @FGG! I am truly sorry for your setback, may it be short lived. I am truly sorry for everyone on this platform. Four months ago I had no idea whatsoever about the pain that ears can bring (and I have "only" some moderate tinnitus). *I really like this word; it comes from the Latin cum + patior which can be literally translated with "to suffer with".
@FGG, I’ve read many of your posts and benefited from them. Your compassion and your knowledge has been so helpful. It is so right that you are being acknowledged in this thread. Everyone on the site is here for you too. Hugs to you.
@FGG is a true gem on this site. She has seemingly boundless knowledge and unfailing compassion. I have learned so much from her insightful and intelligent contributions. I can't wait for the day when we can all get treated.
I'm afraid I also want to chime in... but I'll be quick! I'm so grateful for your posts, and your presence on this forum. You are a pleasure to read; I wish I had an ounce of your intelligence and knowledge. Don't give up - you can do this. @aot, you are much appreciated too, which I hope you know .
I never really knew what it was like to have a hero or someone you deeply admire, and then @FGG dropped onto the forum and I was all “oh... OH, now I get it.” She is truly marvelous. Words kind of fail me, but what I know without a shadow of a doubt is that this forum wouldn’t be quite as bright without her compassion and camaraderie.
Just so everyone knows, she is *totally* biased because she's become like a sister to me over the last year .
Sorry if this is really awkward, but a long time ago, I was playing Letter Jam with my wife and this arrangement of letters popped up. It's impossible to miss since I've never seen AOT used anywhere else in my life. I never posted it because it never felt appropriate. It still doesn't, frankly, but AOT to U too.
For the record, aot is a completely random, meaningless name I made up on whim. Some people assume it's my initials or a reference to the anime Attack On Titan, but it is neither.
I googled it and wondered that. Interesting. I used to play games and Ao almost makes me think of Area of. As in AoE (Area of Effect). Zugzug comes from what a peon says in Warcraft III, my favorite game of all time. Back to the thread. Go FGG. I think she said she likes strategy games.
Seconded, and a @Zugzug appreciation thread also! I see you both being so supportive to people in the Suicidal thread.
Yeah when I see she's responded to a thread, I know it's always going to be heater of a response. Thanks @FGG!
I was first drawn to this forum because some of the whackier elements kept me amused on sleepless nights. I'm still here, well over a year later, because I eventually found highly intelligent conversation going on in the Research News section. @FGG is a major contributor to every interesting conversation and I am huge fan. Thank You!
From the Photo Album thread, here's "our" FGG. BTW, I concur with every single positive comment about her on this thread. Besides that, I think she's a real sweetheart. @Hazel too! -- Thank you for being here @FGG, this forum would not be the same without your presence and contributions. Love the pic!
This is an old photo (from my vet school days). I have posted more recent ones though. Edit: Yes, let's change this to a @Hazel appreciation thread.
