Hi there,
I'm new to tinnitus. I woke up with it at the end of July. The cause is unknown, as I don't have any hearing loss on a standard audiogram, but I've had Visual Snow Syndrome since birth, so it might be related. I'm also open to the possibility of hidden or high-frequency loss from earbud use (which I've now stopped) or from generally living in a loud city. I've gradually managed to adjust to the noise, but the initial onset caused intense stress that I'm still struggling to release from my body.
Unfortunately, at a particularly bad time, I've developed a skin issue. It wasn't caused by stress alone, but I suspect stress is making it worse. It's a stubborn condition that ideally requires a six- to eight-week course of a tetracycline antibiotic to support topical treatment. I know some oral antibiotics can worsen tinnitus, but I really want my skin to heal, as I have a public-facing job and it's affecting my confidence.
I decided on Lymecycline, which seems to be safer for tinnitus than other options. It's not known to be ototoxic, and tinnitus isn't listed as a side effect. However, after just two doses, my tinnitus has become a more intense version of my baseline sound.
Has anyone here experienced a spike during a longer course of antibiotics? Did the volume eventually settle or plateau, or did it keep increasing the longer you took the medication? I'd consult my doctor, but I don't think there's much medical understanding of tinnitus, so I'd rather hear from other patients.
