10% of Women Who Suffer Constant Ringing in Their Ears Attempt Suicide, Study Suggests

I mean, we all know this—it’s not news to us, so I don’t think it does any harm. But I think it’s more important for this kind of research to reach people who aren’t aware of it. Raising awareness can help people understand that this is a far more serious condition than they realize and bring...

Ear Pressure and Pain After a Restroom Hand Dryer and Child Screaming

There are no definitive answers with this kind of thing, but my inclination is that since even a faucet now sounds loud to you when it did not before, and there have not been any major events that would push your hearing into the noxacusis realm, you may have simply increased your sound...

A Year Later, I Don't Know What My Tinnitus Baseline Is

It sounds like you’ve identified the issue, so now the question is: how do you go about resolving it? Would exercise help? Physical or psychological therapy? Meditation? Or even medication, if you’re open to that option? My therapist taught me something called autogenic training. It’s...

@Nes Could just be the TMJ, but I'm thinking if it was nerve damage you'd be getting more actual numbness than just tingling and possibly some pain or cold/warmth. Guess one way to test it... once it's settled down, purposefully tense up your face for a minute or two and see if it's the same...

@orenge01 Well, it's really your call... can you cope with a worsening of your tinnitus? Was it originally caused by noise damage? Me, this level of tinnitus is something I can just about deal with, it was noise induced and no in ear audio seems like a really small sacrifice even if it just...

    Suicidal

After a few therapy sessions and a lot of back and forth, I decided the worst was over and to hold off for now—at least until my tinnitus had settled more, following the general rule of thumb of about 18 months. I think the main point is, why risk it? Having sound pumped directly in to your ear when your ears are already more sensitive to issues... the human auditory system wasn't really designed for it. Might have an impact on hyperacusis and such too by shutting you out from your surroundings.

Sleep Architecture Disrupted in Tinnitus Sufferers

There’s no way medicated sleep is going to be as good for you as natural sleep, so it is a judgment call. Long term use of an antidepressant may not be great for you, but long term sleep deprivation is not great either. Unless you can adjust over time through therapy, exercise, or other methods...

It sounds like it could be TTTS—Tonic Tensor Tympani Syndrome (not to be confused with twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome). TTTS is believed to be at least partially anxiety-related. Yes, I really do think this is promising research, and better imaging tools are desperately needed. Before all my issues started, I had no idea how limited otoscopes were. Research on the Origins of Hyperacusis and Potential Future Cochlear Imaging

Why do you think it’s completely different? I assume old age still degrades the auditory nerve and synapses, but noise trauma speeds up the process. The lack of tinnitus may simply be because the brain adapts to the loss as it happens more gradually or due to genetics.

A Simple Trick to Improve Earplug Effectiveness at Loud Events

Intermittent High-Frequency Tinnitus with Fluctuating Intensity and Sleep Disruption

Immunological and Antigenic Signatures Associated with Chronic Illnesses, Including Tinnitus, After COVID-19 Vaccination

The unfortunate thing about COVID-19 is that it can cause all of that: tinnitus, hyperacusis, brain fog, and much worse, on its own. Since avoiding it forever is unlikely, it makes sense to have some protection against potentially severe outcomes if you do get it. Nothing in life is entirely...

I’m relatively new to all this, so forgive me if I’m totally off base, but even if it fails to pass through the round window and restore synaptopathy, since neurotrophin-3 has CNS potential, might this still potentially help with some types of noxacusis caused by middle ear damage?

    Cilcare's CIL001 Targets Cochlear Synaptopathy — An American/French Collaboration

Well, presumably the brain will have to adapt to its restored hearing and might decide at that point that the tinnitus sound is no longer necessary — or perhaps integrate the new audio into that pathway.
