- unknown. Railroad brakeman/conductor for 15 years.
I've been suffering with this for 20 years. I've seen doctors, audiologists, and just about every professional I could think of. The worst part is trying to engage in normal conversations, especially with my teenage granddaughters.
My hearing loss is in the higher frequencies, and I believe it's due to the 15 years I spent working for the railroad. The loud whistles and the screeching of steel wheels on steel rails likely contributed to the damage. Back in the 1970s and 80s, no one seemed too concerned about hearing protection.
My granddaughters live with us, and I miss so much of what they say. It's frustrating constantly asking them to repeat themselves. I'd like to think that if this constant ringing would stop, I might be able to hear them more clearly. An audiologist once tested the frequency of the ringing and confirmed that female voices fall within the same range as my hearing loss and the tinnitus.
